Catriona Lally: ‘I’m not great at arguing or fighting but that has its limits when defending my children’

How agreeable are you? Mostly agreeable. I tend not to complain or demand off-menu items in cafés or restaurants because the workers are not paid enough to have to deal with added nonsense. If it is a carvery situation, however, I will be asking for an extra jug of gravy. I’m not great at arguing or fighting and can’t be bothered with the drama of conflict, but that has its limits when it comes to defending my children. Years ago I told an older kid in a playground I would kill him if he threw stones at my toddler again. Disagreeable never felt so good. Where do you come in your family’s birth order and has it defined you? Second of four. I do not think it has defined me in any meaningful way because the four of us were born within five years, too close in age to have…

‘She was wronged’: new film lifts the lid on an infamous Irish ‘witch burning’

Mark Fitzgerald recalls the response of one customer in his pub in Cloneen, Co Tipperary, when told a drama group in the area was making a film about the burning to death of local woman Bridget Cleary in 1895. “Isn’t it a bit soon?” Fitzgerald himself has a part in the film. Fellow cast member Eugene O’Meara says the burning alive by Michael Cleary of his 26-year-old wife remained a taboo subject for well over a century in south Tipperary. Cleary claimed she was possessed by a fairy. “I remember I came home from primary school one day in Mullinahone – this would have been in the 1960s – and I recited this rhyme I had learned: ‘Are you a witch or are you a fairy or are you the wife of Michael Cleary?’ I asked my father what did it mean.“He had been born in 1917 in Drangan, just…

Haughey was right: the art in Government Buildings is terrible

Puzzled once again by the doings of Government this week, it occurred to Overheard that bad art could be to blame. Last year’s State papers from the National Archives revealed that Charles Haughey, the only taoiseach you’d conceivably allow to discuss high culture at a salon, was annoyed about the quality of the paintings during his 1991 refurb of Government Buildings.“Of the portraits hanging on the wall of the chamber itself, the Taoiseach has reservations about those of Pearse and Tone, in terms of the quality of the work,” one of Haughey’s assistants wrote to architect Klaus Unger, referring to the room where Cabinet considers diesel subsidies and other matters of state.“Would it be possible to have these ‘re-executed’ (the portraits, of course) by other artists?”Overheard, in the clever guise of an ordinary citizen interested in architecture, finally had the opportunity to check what Haughey was talking about during a…

What’s the best way to cool wine? Are ice buckets better than ice cubes?

Ice buckets, provided you use a mix of water and ice cubes, offer a very efficient way to bring down the temperature of rosé and white wines quickly. Ice cubes by themselves don’t work nearly as well. Buckets do have several disadvantages though. Your wine will very quickly become freezing cold, and you won’t be able to taste a thing. Removing the bottle from the bucket requires a cloth to stop water spilling on the table. Sommeliers in fancy restaurants love doing this for you as part of their show. At one stage every restaurant had a collection of ice buckets, but with the advent of wine fridges, they have become less common. I find them less practical at home. I had a very smart Murano glass ice bucket for at least 10 years, but never used it for the intended purpose. A fridge is a far easier and more…
