Costarricense Marie-Claire Arrieta recibe prestigiosa beca canadiense por sus investigaciones sobre el microbioma

La microbióloga costarricense Marie-Claire Arrieta Méndez fue galardonada esta semana con una Beca de Investigación Arthur B. McDonald, del Consejo de Investigación en Ciencias Naturales e Ingeniería de Canadá (NSERC, por sus siglas en inglés).

Esas becas reconocen a investigadores académicos en etapa temprana de su carrera, y los apoyan para fortalecer su capacidad de investigación, de modo que lleguen a ser líderes en sus campos e inspiren a otros. El NSERC entrega hasta seis cada año e incluyen una subvención de investigación de hasta $250.000 y un apoyo salarial de hasta $180.000.

Las Becas McDonald son uno de los reconocimientos académicos más prestigiosos de Canadá y llevan el nombre de Arthur B. McDonald, el destacado físico canadiense ganador del Premio Nobel de Física en 2015.

Ditching the triple lock does not require a referendum

Sir, – Jim O’Sullivan (Letters, October 30th) calls for a referendum on the triple lock to ensure the will of the people and not that of “powerful people” is served. I presume the powerful people he refers to are the members of the Dáil who are elected by the people to legislate and govern on our behalf? There is no need for a referendum because removing the triple lock does not change the Constitution. Referendums are expensive, dominate the government agenda for several months at the expense of everything else, are frequently hijacked by unrelated issues, and results can be skewed by protest votes against the government of the day. They should be held only when absolutely necessary to decide constitutional issues. The triple lock was approved in the Dáil and can be removed by the Dáil. Getting to the bottom of Dublin’s horse manure problem

Sir, – Dublin City Council is apparently investigating the dumping of horse manure (“Horse manure dumped around Dublin suburbs,” October 28th). I understand the council can ask householders and businesses to show they have lawful arrangements to dispose of their waste. A first step would be to ask the owners of urban horses who collects their waste. If the answer is “nobody”, then the next step is to see whether DNA from the horses matches that of the contents of the black bags in the street. Blame cars for erratic Dublin buses

Sir, – Various letter writers to The Irish Times complain rightly about late and full buses. Every morning on the road I live on there are 100 to 150 cars backed up from the traffic lights. The majority of these cars have one person in them. Two Dublin buses with 90 people in each can take these cars off the road, improving the speed & efficiency of the buses. But we know this will never happen in Dublin because the car is king. Sir, – I read with interest Michael O’Meara’s letter “Planning for offshore wind” (Letters, October 26th). He questions whether we are increasing our renewable energy generation for the wrong reasons – to meet the growing demands of industrial growth, in particular more data centres. I entirely agree with what he says. On a related issue, I believe we should all consider our digital footprint. We regularly hear about our carbon footprint, some of which is related to what we do online, and how we might reduce that. But we must also consider how to lessen our online data. Paddy McKillen firm behind luxury Dublin apartment block records €5.5m ‘loan forgiveness’

Paddy McKillen and Padraig Drayne’s firm, which developed a luxury Dublin city centre apartment block, in which homes sold for up to €1.8 million, booked a €5.5 million gain from “loan forgiveness” last year. Government departments are planning to take another look at whether the Republic should apply for part of a leftover pot of €21 billion in European Union-backed loans, intended to boost national defence budgets. The Department of Finance last year vetoed plans for the Republic to borrow up to €100 million to upgrade Defence Forces equipment, in the initial round of new EU Safe [Security Action for Europe] loans on offer from Brussels, to push governments to spend more on their defence.
