A visit to Dublin city’s stores confirms Christmas season is well and truly under way

Sir, - While visiting some larger stores in Dublin city centre today, I couldn’t help but conclude that Halloween is already over, superseded by the Christmas season that is well and truly under way. I must have missed the Halloween decorations when I was tardily enjoying the beach back in August. – Yours, etc,ENDA CUNNINGHAM,Sandycove,Co Dublin.

Irish marathon record holder Peter Lynch primed for another top finish in New York

In the six months since Peter Lynch lowered the Irish marathon record to 2:06:08, finishing ninth in London in April on a groundbreaking day for distance running, every little addition to his training has been designed to make him fitter, stronger and, ultimately, more confident in his own ability. Which doesn’t automatically transfer to a race as historically testing and tactical as Sunday’s New York City Marathon, although Lynch is now primed once again to mix it with some of the world’s best in what will be only his fifth attempt over the classic 26.2-mile distance. The Kilkenny runner also sets out to provide some Irish presence at the front of the elite men’s race for the first time in more than two decades. Mark Carroll last broke into the top 10 with his sixth-place finish in 2002. John Treacy also finished third twice, in 1988 and 1990. The twisting,…

Grandparents can be the first to notice a child’s problems

Sir, – With regards to the recent controversy about grandparents needing permission to hug their grandchildren, I would contend that often it can be the grandparents who might be the first to pick up on any issues or stress a child might be experiencing. Particularly if they are doing school runs or dropping them off to extracurricular activities, as is often the case. – Yours etc,FERGUS MADDEN,Goatstown,Dublin 14.

Shamrock Rovers set for Dundalk trophy lift as St Pat’s and Bohs rue what might have been

After securing a sixth League of Ireland title in seven seasons a week ago, Stephen Bradley and his Shamrock Rovers players will face a first of sorts when they visit Dundalk at Oriel Park in Friday night’s closing round of Premier Division games. On each of their previous five triumphs, the league trophy was presented to Rovers on home soil at Tallaght Stadium. This will be the first time under Bradley that the handover is made at an away ground, with only a small smattering of travelling supporters on hand to celebrate the moment in the flesh. But that’s how the champions wanted it. While the league were keen to give Rovers the trophy in Tallaght last Friday following the title-clinching win over Sligo Rovers that sparked a mass pitch invasion, Bradley had refused to entertain it in the build-up to that game.“I didn’t feel it would send the right…

Pat Kenny injects touch of venom into take on Charles Haughey’s kickback-funded lifestyle

There’s no hiding Pat Kenny’s excitement. “Halloween is coming,” he proclaims on Sunday’s Pat Kenny Show (Newstalk, weekends), with an eager anticipation more befitting a young trick-or-treater than a veteran broadcaster. Sure enough, Kenny throws himself into the spirit of the season, whether it’s recalling bygone traditions or telling stories of scary characters with shadowy pasts. For the latter task the host recruits the services of a guest capable of spooking even the most hardened audience (and the odd journalist too), as the former editor and broadcaster Vincent Browne joins Kenny to assess the life of the late taoiseach Charles Haughey. Once upon a time this would have been a saga of fearful proportions – the spectre of Haughey haunted Irish political life for decades – but its frightening power is now much diminished. Part of this is down to Browne, who has just written a biography of Haughey. Although…

The most attractive investment product on the market

A pension is the single most important and tax-efficient investment most people are ever likely to make. With generous tax reliefs on contributions and investment growth, retirement saving should be a no-brainer, yet it took government intervention in the form of the MyFutureFund auto-enrolment scheme to bring more than 800,000 people into the pensions system. On the face of it, pensions should be nigh on irresistible as an investment proposition, particularly for higher-rate taxpayers. Tax relief on contributions means that every €100 saved only costs those individuals €60 with the State effectively making up the difference. And the benefits don’t end there. All investment growth in pension funds is completely tax free. In addition, there is no exit tax on retirement unless the individual opts to exceed the tax-free threshold when taking their lump sum. For members of occupational schemes, employer contributions need to be brought into the equation. Even…
