Over the past few weeks, political unrest in France has led to a sharp rise in the interest rates the French government must pay on new borrowing. Meanwhile, US interest rates have also reached levels not seen for a couple of decades. It’s a big change from only five years ago, when some governments (including Ireland) were able to borrow money at a negative interest yield. Now Ireland has to pay about 3½ per cent annually when borrowing for 10 years, and the German government fares little better. So what’s going on and how much does it matter for us in Ireland? Although both the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Federal Reserve held back from increasing interest rates at their meetings this week, the general expectation is that their commitment to bring inflation under control will mean some further increases in coming months. The changing of the guard at…
John Crean and Tony O’Neill’s Peppard Investments, which is involved in the provision of emergency accommodation, more than doubled its profit to €15 million last year. The Cork-based group led by Crean and O’Neill has interests spanning property development, nursing homes and emergency accommodation centres. Newly filed consolidated accounts for their group by Peppard Investment Holdings Limited showed their network of 23 Irish companies reported combined turnover of €29.2 million last year, an increase of 17 per cent compared with 2024. The group’s pretax profits more than doubled to €16.5 million in the year after it received an additional €9 million of income from a joint venture involved in emergency accommodation in 2025 called Kintrona Limited. Following a tax expense of almost €1.2 million, Crean and O’Neill’s group booked a final after-tax profit of €15.2 million, up from €6.1 million the year previous. The pair behind the property development company…
Sir, – The behaviour of Irish public sector unions recently has been nothing short of disgraceful. The recent strike caused real hardship to some of the most vulnerable members of our society: the sick and the poor. It was blackmail for selfish gain at the expense of others. The latest announcement by gardaí of a work to rule during the upcoming EU summit is a further extension of this unacceptable behaviour. The security of the event is being jeopardised and the State’s reputation is being undermined. – Yours, etc,PAUL KILCULLEN,Stillorgan,Dublin.
It’s hard to figure out what Fine Gael and its leader have been doing for the past couple of weeks, as they managed to turn an unfortunate health episode of one of its more colourful Ministers into a soap opera of accusation, intrigue and speculation. I know Simon Harris isn’t getting much sleep these days, but still. Next weekend the party gets the chance to gee-up the troops and rally around the leader at its ardfheis in Cork. God knows they need it. Mind you, these gatherings are also the opportunity for gossip, conspiracy, scheming and plotting. So, lots to look forward to. Everyone hopes Patrick O’Donovan makes a full recovery and is back at work quickly, and Harris has been very clear that he wants him back in the Cabinet – though, from what I can tell, few people expect to see him back soon. It is to be…
Sir, – We are often told how cheap renewable electricity sources are, even while the price we pay goes up. Barry O’Halloran’s excellent article (“Breaking down the bill: where does the money for your electricity go?”, Business, October 30th) goes some way towards explaining this paradox. A big part of the cost of our electricity now goes to pay for the increasingly complex system of wires needed to bring power from the generators to our homes and another €18 billion will need to be spent over the next three years to further improve this system. This is the hidden cost of adapting the grid to run on many disparate, scattered and largely unpredictable sources of renewable energy. In the debate over nuclear power, the upfront construction costs are often raised. An overlooked advantage is that, as nuclear is a large single and dependable source of power, no expensive electricity grid…
