Ditching the triple lock does not require a referendum
Sir, – Jim O’Sullivan (Letters, October 30th) calls for a referendum on the triple lock to ensure the will of the people and not that of “powerful people” is served. I presume the powerful people he refers to are the members of the Dáil who are elected by the people to legislate and govern on our behalf? There is no need for a referendum because removing the triple lock does not change the Constitution. Referendums are expensive, dominate the government agenda for several months at the expense of everything else, are frequently hijacked by unrelated issues, and results can be skewed by protest votes against the government of the day. They should be held only when absolutely necessary to decide constitutional issues. The triple lock was approved in the Dáil and can be removed by the Dáil. O’Sullivan argues that there has been only one UN veto on peacekeeping missions…
Getting to the bottom of Dublin’s horse manure problem
Sir, – Dublin City Council is apparently investigating the dumping of horse manure (“Horse manure dumped around Dublin suburbs,” October 28th). I understand the council can ask householders and businesses to show they have lawful arrangements to dispose of their waste. A first step would be to ask the owners of urban horses who collects their waste. If the answer is “nobody”, then the next step is to see whether DNA from the horses matches that of the contents of the black bags in the street. While these investigations continue, it would be great if the council could collect the manure dumped on my street, and reported more than a week ago. – Yours, etc,BARRY DOHERTY,Dublin 7.
Blame cars for erratic Dublin buses
Sir, – Various letter writers to The Irish Times complain rightly about late and full buses. Every morning on the road I live on there are 100 to 150 cars backed up from the traffic lights. The majority of these cars have one person in them. Two Dublin buses with 90 people in each can take these cars off the road, improving the speed & efficiency of the buses. But we know this will never happen in Dublin because the car is king. In the meantime if we want a better bus service we have to stop blaming Dublin Bus and aim our efforts at the powerful car lobby. – Yours, etc, Shea Carroll,Emmet Road, Dublin 8.
Willie Mullins has no Down Royal runner but does have a shot at more Breeders’ Cup glory
Racing’s codes are in flux right now, a point underlined by how Willie Mullins bids for more Breeders’ Cup glory in Keeneland, Kentucky, on Saturday night but doesn’t have a single runner on jump racing’s first Grade One programme of the season at Down Royal hours earlier. Ethical Diamond sprang a 28/1 shock in last year’s $5 million Breeders’ Cup Turf in Del Mar and will again have Dylan Browne McMonagle on board in the mile-and-a-half grass highlight due off at 9.36pm Irish time. It is the last of four Grade One contests on “the lawn” at the second day of US racing’s biggest meeting of the year. There are 11 Irish-trained runners spread across them. Donnacha O’Brien’s Comanche Brave takes on the top local sprinter Bacio in the Turf Sprint off at 5.48pm, while Willie McCreery’s Jancis and the Ger Lyons trained Red Letter join Ballydoyle’s Precise in the…
We are all responsible for the growth of data centres
Sir, – I read with interest Michael O’Meara’s letter “Planning for offshore wind” (Letters, October 26th). He questions whether we are increasing our renewable energy generation for the wrong reasons – to meet the growing demands of industrial growth, in particular more data centres. I entirely agree with what he says. On a related issue, I believe we should all consider our digital footprint. We regularly hear about our carbon footprint, some of which is related to what we do online, and how we might reduce that. But we must also consider how to lessen our online data. In the context of data centres, we must bear in mind that all online data is stored there – so we are all responsible for their continued growth and proliferation. The big tech companies require these centres increasingly because of our usage of online social media apps, etc. So we should all,…
Paddy McKillen firm behind luxury Dublin apartment block records €5.5m ‘loan forgiveness’
Paddy McKillen and Padraig Drayne’s firm, which developed a luxury Dublin city centre apartment block, in which homes sold for up to €1.8 million, booked a €5.5 million gain from “loan forgiveness” last year. Broadfield Development Limited, controlled by McKillen and Drayne, secured permission to build the mixed-use commercial and residential development called 55 Lad Lane in 2017. Construction work started on the six-storey, 25-unit apartment block in 2019. Apartments have been sold individually in the development over the past two years, with the final home in the block sold earlier this month. New accounts published by the company show it recorded a “provision for loan forgiveness” of almost €5.5 million last year. That helped drive a profit after tax of close to €3.9 million. The final tranche of apartments in 55 Lad Lane were sold this year. Based on the Property Price Register, one-, two- and three-bed homes were…
Sliding into a military alliance
Sir, – You report that Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister of State Thomas Byrne have criticised former president Michael D Higgins’s recent interview in which the latter accused the Government of being “less than honest” on military neutrality and of stealthily “sliding” this State into “preparatory” military alliances without putting the choices plainly before the people (“Martin rejects Higgins’s triple lock comments”, October 27th). In response, Martin said that “we have no intention of joining Nato”, but that is not what is in play. In truth, the Irish State is in no position fiscally to fully join Nato, which expects member states to spend at least 2 per cent of GDP on “defence” – a target increasing to 5 per cent by 2035. Moreover, as a member of Nato’s Partnership for Peace, Ireland is already Nato-aligned and within its camp on the cheap rate. The Government’s move to dismantle the…
Government considering bid for portion of €21bn EU ‘defence’ loans
Government departments are planning to take another look at whether the Republic should apply for part of a leftover pot of €21 billion in European Union-backed loans, intended to boost national defence budgets. The Department of Finance last year vetoed plans for the Republic to borrow up to €100 million to upgrade Defence Forces equipment, in the initial round of new EU Safe [Security Action for Europe] loans on offer from Brussels, to push governments to spend more on their defence. The European Commission, the EU’s executive body in Brussels, has this week invited member states to apply to borrow leftover funds from the programme that still has to be spent. Donohoe vetoed proposal to borrow €100m for military equipment under EU planEarlier this year, Minister for Defence Helen McEntee said she would be open to availing of the loans in any second round of the scheme. In response to…
Minister for Health’s disregard for patient safety is terrifying
Sir, – The querying of the legality of Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill‘s HSE recruitment restrictions by the Labour Party is a huge relief and feels like the first ounce of common sense seen. The lack of regard the Minister is showing for patient safety with her authoritarian diktat is terrifying, and should have every voter in the land up in arms. Unfilled clinical positions will result in poorer patient care and outcomes, as well as an increase in emigration of newly qualified healthcare professionals. – Yours, etc,DR MARY SCRIVEN WALSH. Athlone,Co Westmeath.
