Belastend materiaal mogelijk versnipperd in Servië nu corruptiejacht begint

Gentle Monster review: Léa Seydoux is quietly devastating in Marie Kreutzer’s dark chamber piece

With a curtsey to the late Princess Diana, Corsage, Marie Kreutzer’s much-admired film from 2022, probed the intramarital loneliness of the much-loved, wildly fashionable 19th-century royal rebel Empress Elisabeth of Austria. That much-decorated film became embroiled in controversy when its star Florian Teichtmeister, who played the emperor, was charged and convicted of the possession of child pornography. Coincidentally, Kreutzer was already working on Gentle Monster, a dark what-if chamber piece in which a husband is arrested in similar circumstances. Léa Seydoux is quietly devastating as Lucy, a French musician who relocates to the Bavarian countryside with her husband, Philip (Laurence Rupp), a German television director, and their young son. Their comfortable domestic life is torpedoed when police arrive with a warrant and seize Philip’s electronic devices. He is accused of distributing child-sexual-abuse material through an online group. Investigators are also examining whether he helped produce it. Philip claims he was…

Electrocutions, disease and no pay: how workers risk exploitation in Europe’s datacentres

As thousands of datacentres are constructed across Europe, the Guardian and Investigate Europe have uncovered disturbing evidence that some workers building them are exposed to dangerous conditions and living in fear of speaking outSandu* checked his watch. He was winding down the last 15 minutes of his shift at a vast Google datacentre site in Saint-Ghislain, Belgium, in March, when the call came in. The 34-year-old electrical tester had already worked almost 10 hours, but says such last-minute jobs were normal: “I had no choice. People have been fired after saying no.”The task was one Sandu had done many times before and involved a series of tests measuring the safety and integrity of the electrical wiring. A protective suit was locked away in an equipment room. The round trip would have added another 15 minutes to the job, he says, and people were waiting, so he decided not to retrieve…

Asimismo,…

Pensions for the planet: balancing sustainability with the right investment

Sustainability knows no bounds in modern Irish business and pensions are no different. Defined contribution and personal retirement savings account investors are gaining increased access to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) options in addition to conventional investment funds. While we all want to do good for the planet, there’s the more pressing question for pension holders of whether basing a decision on ESG issues can hurt the overall investment. By and large, the answer is no but it is slightly more complex than that. Risk and strategy, irrespective of what is being invested in, remain the key factors. “Overall, choosing an ESG pension option does not necessarily involve a substantial performance sacrifice,” says Rav Vithaldas, partner and pensions assurance leader at EY Ireland. “Performance tends to be driven by the underlying asset allocation, investment strategy, fees and manager skill rather than the ESG label itself. “Well-constructed ESG funds can deliver…

US company has option to buy Kildare data centre

A US company has an option to buy a proposed €3 billion data centre if planners approve the project in the face of stiff local opposition, it has emerged. An Coimisiún Pleanála is weighing appeals against Kildare County Council’s decision last year to grant Herbata Ltd permission to build a data centre close to the M7 in Naas. US-owned energy business Mission Critical has an option to buy Herbata within six months if planners sanction the project. It has already provided €5 million in finance to the Irish company, it has emerged. Filings with the US stock market regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), show that Mission Critical’s parent, E2 Companies, can, through its subsidiary, acquire Herbata itself, the site and all planning permissions within six months of their grant. Mission Critical is the Irish subsidiary of E2, which specialises in power management systems. Herbata chief executive Gerry Prendergast…

Thinking about retirement? Think about thresholds

It’s a problem lots of people would like to have. Back in the bad old days of the economic crash and the Troika, it was decided to limit the amount people could accumulate in their pension funds through the introduction of a Standard Fund Threshold (SFT). Following a few revisions, this was set at €2 million, calculated as the amount that would deliver a pension of around €100,000. Exceeding the threshold comes with a penalty of a 40 per cent chargeable excess tax (CET). It was originally thought that this threshold would only apply to fairly wealthy people. Then came the Garda retirement crisis when it turned out that senior gardaí were choosing to retire because they would exceed the threshold if they didn’t. The Government responded by agreeing to increase the SFT over the coming years, but that still requires some serious decision making by those with sizeable pension…

Plan your retirement fund to make it last a lifetime

Improved life expectancy has its downsides, most notably the prospect of your retirement savings running out while you still live. We look at some of the strategies people can employ to ensure they enjoy a comfortable retirement for the rest of their days. The challenge in retirement is not just to avoid running out of money; it’s helping people to enjoy a reasonable income while also retaining enough flexibility and security to navigate an uncertain future, says Ian Moynihan, director of propositions, Irish Life Employer Solutions. “A good retirement plan combines secure, reliable income for everyday essential spending, flexible invested savings to cater for unexpected or changing needs, and regular reviews as circumstances evolve.” Professional advice is really important when putting a solid retirement plan in place, says Moynihan. “First, start by looking at the income you can depend on, secure sources like the State pension and any defined benefit…

Your pension: how to make up for lost time

Foresight might be there in abundance, but financial pressures at different life stages can make diligent pension contributions seem more like a luxury than a necessity. Whether you started your pension later in life or dialled back payments to focus on other, more pressing considerations, the good news is that experts say there are practical steps someone can take to boost their pension at every age. “There’s little value in focusing on when you wish you’d started.” That’s according to Sinead McEvoy, head of retirement solutions with Standard Life, who says the pension provider’s research shows that two in five people are concerned they won’t be able to retire. “Life rarely follows the ideal financial planning timeline, and that can leave people worried about whether they’ve enough time to catch up,” she says. “Income can rise and fall, careers change direction, people may take time out of work, start a…

Ensuring your nest egg is adequate to meet your needs

Starting pension contributions early is a major advantage but is really only the first step towards a comfortable retirement. Even though it may seem like a distant dream, how can people ensure they have built an adequate nest egg to meet their financial needs when the time comes? Shane O’Farrell, director of workplace markets for Irish Life Employer Solutions, says it’s about having enough to pay for “the life you want when you finish working”. “That means it’s about the quality of the pension you have, not simply just having one.” The reality, O’Farrell says, is that many people will find a gap between what they have and what they’ll need. “So, you need to be honest and ask yourself, do the numbers add up?” Evelyn Ryder, director, corporate pensions with New Ireland, says a good starting point is to review all the pension assets that an individual may have,…

Tal cual

VORACIDAD.
