Unions warn of further strike date in November if no deal is agreed at pay talks

A second national public services strike will be scheduled for Wednesday November 11th if no deal between the Government and management on a new pay agreement is reached on Friday or over the weekend. In a message sent to public service unions on Friday morning, Kevin Callinan, general secretary of Fórsa and chair of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions’ public services committee, said the 19 unions it encompassed should meet on Monday to get an update on the talks and, if no agreement has been reached by then, to discuss taking further action. In the message, he says the strike, which would again close the State’s schools and severely affect health, local authority and other services, would allow for demonstrations in Dublin and other major urban centres by more than 300,000 staff affected. The move comes as talks continue between the two sides at the Workplace Relations Commission. Senior…

Are extended warranties worth the money?

You’ve just bought yourself a new washing machine with so many different spin cycles, you could choose a different one for every day of the month. Or maybe it’s a fancy new TV, with a 4K display, an AI assistant and a screen that covers half your sittingroom wall. The shop assistant scans your item and next comes the inevitable question. “Would you like to buy another three years of cover for your new [insert product]?”The washing machine has just set you back €650 and the TV a cool €1,399. The money you’ve spent should ensure both are still in decent working condition several years later. But what if something were to go wrong? Perhaps the extra couple of hundred euro for enhanced insurance would be worth the investment given the outlay? The nightmare scenario of the washing machine or TV going kaput a week after the warranty expires flashes…
