An Irish language take on consent

Sir, – The outcry about the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre advert with the focus on the grandparents surely misses the point. Children have a right to express an opinion, be listened to and respected.

It’s not about how much the grandparents love their grandchild but how much they respect their wishes in that moment. The underlying implication of the negative response to the video is that adults’ rights triumph over children’s rights every time.

– Yours, etc,MÁIRE NÍ CHÉITINN,Kilmacthomas,Co Waterford. Sir, – The issue of consent has prompted some interesting correspondence arising from the video of the grandparents’ unwanted hug.

The Irish language has two plain and unambiguous words to address the matters of consent and will: “cead” and “toil”. “An bhfuil cead agam, le do thoil?” meaning “Have I consent by your will?”One person seeks “cead” from another in the hope that it may be granted by their “toil”.

The Irish Times view on rural Ireland: a focused strategy is needed

As the tourism season winds down and the nights draw in, the inhabitants of rural Ireland once again confront the downside of being one of the most dispersed communities in Europe. In broad terms rural Ireland is relatively densely populated, particularly when compared to the likes of Finland or Sweden. But its denizens are far more widely spread out as a consequence of historic settlement patterns which eschewed towns and villages for isolated homesteads. This may account for some of the attractiveness of the Irish countryside but the consequences in terms of the provision of services, connectivity and community cohesion are obvious. Our Rural Future, Rural Development Policy 2026-2031, the five-year strategy launched by the Government this week, aims to address these deficits by building on the previous plan, which bore the same name and ran from 2021 to 2025. Taoiseach Micheál Martin credited the previous plan, in part at…

Conference on good jobs hears Government’s abandonment of living wage ‘shameful’

The Government’s abandonment of its commitment to adopting the living wage as the minimum that can be paid to adult workers has been described as “shameful” at an event organised to highlight the importance of “quality jobs”. Minister for State with responsibility for Employment Alan Dillon told the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (Ictu) event in Dublin that the challenge “was no longer simply how many jobs we create”. It was whether they were “good jobs that pay fairly and provide workers with opportunities to learn, develop and progress ... jobs that give people confidence about the future”, he said. Dillon said several measures had been introduced to make work “more inclusive and sustainable” and that “we’re also very much committed to improving wages”. He noted a recently announced 5 per cent increase to the National Minimum Wage, which is to rise to €14.94 per hour in January. The related…
