The Irish Times view on the Brazilian election: a dramatic win for Lula

The dramatic and unexpected re-election of Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva to a record fourth term is a remarkable personal achievement for the outstanding South American political figure of his generation. Importantly, it will reverberate across the world, a demonstration that the line can be held against the wave of Trump-cloned autocrats who threaten western democracies.Lula ended an18-month string of seven consecutive victories for right-wing candidates across Latin America and his win complicates plans by US president Donald Trump for dominance in the region. The 81-year-old’s victory came after a lacklustre first round three weeks ago when he trailed far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro by two million votes. It was the product of a mass mobilisation, galvanised by social media, of stay-at-home voters which saw an extra five million flock to the polls. A record turnout gave Lula ten million more votes, a 52 to 48 per cent majority, the…

The Irish Times view on hospital parking charges: the case for a cap

The high price of hospital parking is one of the biggest bugbears of hospital users, particularly those who have to attend regularly for treatment or to visit. The latest figures go some way towards explaining why; ¤73.5 million has been extracted from the pockets of those using the parking facilities in fees since 2020, according to the Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill. The figure explains the apparent lack of enthusiasm on the part of the HSE to implement a ¤10 per day cap, as first recommended by the previous government eight years ago. Despite the urging of the Minister, the HSE has kicked the issue a little further down the road by instigating a national review due to be completed next year. There are just four hospitals in the frame – St Vincent’s, St James’s and the Mater in Dublin as well as Cork University Hospital. The others either do not charge…

Connacht look to young guns as they face ‘benchmark’ in Leinster showdown

Connacht are preparing for a “huge game for a whole variety of reasons” when they host Leinster on Friday at Dexcom Stadium in the first of their interprovincial clashes.Connacht head coach Stuart Lancaster, who is a former Leinster coach, says the visitors are the “benchmark” which ensures a big week for his Connacht players – and not least for the URC table where Leinster are currently three points ahead of Connacht in sixth spot, with Connacht in eighth.“Obviously it’s our first interpro, and we know from two years ago we didn’t get any return. We did a little better last year, but we didn’t manage to beat Leinster, so we know they’re the benchmark,” Lancaster says. The last five meetings have gone Leinster’s way, including a comfortable win last season at both the Aviva and the opening of Dexcom Stadium.“Obviously I know them well, am hugely respectful of the coaching team…

The banshee is alive and well on the western seaboard

It has been a while since I raced through the dormitories of the St Louis Convent in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, terrified that a headless earl of Essex was following me. The spooky story was all we incarcerated teenagers talked about in the lead-up to our Halloween break home. Of course, we didn’t know – or care less – that Robert Devereaux, the second earl of Essex, had been beheaded in the Tower of London in 1601, almost three decades before the castle was built by his son, the third earl. It was on the foundations of this castle the St Louis nuns began to build their convent and boarding school in 1888, and it was through these creaky corridors the decapitated nobleman followed me one night on my return from evening prayers. I was 13 years old. It is easy to conjure such memories as the season of Samhain approaches…

People who think Gavin Coombes should have kept schtum are part of the problem

The quality of the Leinster-Munster match on Saturday has been overshadowed by Gavin Coombes’s extremely serious complaint. His allegation that his groin was interfered with led to Leinster’s Tadhg Furlong being cited by Ulsterman Peter Ferguson. If proven and the consequent judicial verdict is guilty, then a hefty sentence is the only outcome possible. Some people hold the opinion that Coombes should have kept schtum, adopting a rugby-style code of omerta. That is just nonsense. He was absolutely right to call it.Previous foul play that was comparable has resulted in a 10-week ban for England’s Joe Marler when he committed the offence on Alun Wyn Jones. And last year, the Bulls and South African player Jan-Hendrik Wessels received a ban of nine weeks for grabbing the genital area of Connacht’s Josh Murphy. So, a potential sanction will, one imagines, at least be similar to these. It will hardly be enough. World…

The Beacon Hospital group at Sandyford in south Dublin last year returned to an operating profit as revenues surged by 49 per cent.New consolidated accounts filed by Macquarie asset management firm, MEIF 7 DIAN Investments Limited, show the hospital delivered an operating profit of €5.69 million after an operating loss of €2.39 million in 2024. Revenues jumped to €288.58 million from €193.66 million the previous year though that comparison is skewed as Macquarie did not complete the acquisition until the first half of 2024 after the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) cleared the purchase in February 2024.The world’s largest infrastructure manager paid €324 million for the hospital group, which had primarily been owned up to that by businessman Denis O’Brien. The hospital group – which also operates outreach clinics in Limerick and Mullingar – recorded a pretax loss of €11.1 million last year. Israeli elections: what you need to know

Israelis vote on Tuesday in the first election since the October 7th, 2023 Hamas-led invasion of southern Israel and the ensuing three years of war that have changed the face of the Middle East. Why it mattersPrime minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving leader, who has been in power for 19 of the last 30 years, is fighting for his political survival. His outgoing government, made up entirely of right-wing and religious parties, has done much to undermine Israel’s liberal democratic foundations, attacked the powers of the independent judiciary and emboldened messianic Jewish extremists who seek to annex the West Bank and Gaza and expel Palestinian residents. The ultra-Orthodox have succeeded in thwarting attempts to draft Haredi students into the army and wish to extend religious influence over many areas of life.Israel is at a critical crossroad. Another term for the outgoing coalition is likely to exacerbate the current trends, turning…
