The O’Brien’s have already turned one of this year’s big Group One dates into a family benefit and could strike again at the Breeders’ Cup in Keeneland later this week. No one has saddled more Breeders’ Cup winners than Aidan O’Brien who sends another massive squad to the 43rd renewal of US racing’s showpiece event.

The first five of 14 Grade One races worth over $34 million in all will take place on Friday night. Billed as “Future Stars Friday”, it will stage the major two-year-old races up for grabs on turf and dirt.

O’Brien has won 21 Breeders’ Cup races, a record he holds jointly with controversial US trainer Bob Baffert. He has won 25 Group One races so far in 2026, just three shy of his 2017 world record tally.

In 2022, he saddled three Breeders’ Cup winners at Keeneland and his team this time includes the outstanding filly Sun Goddess…

Tadhg Furlong gets Sexton’s backing over alleged groin-grabbing incident

Tomorrow will be D-Day for Tadhg Furlong when he faces a disciplinary panel via video conference after being cited for that, well, incident with Munster’s Gavin Coombes last Saturday. The support keeps coming, though, for the prop, Johnny Sexton the latest to insist the alleged offence would be out of character for the Wexford man. “I know Tadhg as a person and I don’t think that’s something he would have done,” he said. Coombes’ focus is solely on Saturday’s URC game against the Durban Sharks, insists Munster coach Clayton McMillan. “Nothing has changed for Gavin,” he said. “What happened at the weekend is now in the hands of the Judicial Committee.” McMillan himself has enough to be thinking about ahead of the game, Michael Scully reporting on the injury list he has to contend with. Despite their loss to Leinster, Gordon D’Arcy has been largely impressed by how Munster have…

Minister for Justice to meet Law Society over legal aid row amid ongoing court disruption

A meeting on Wednesday between the Minister for Justice and the Law Society over a controversial criminal legal aid payments model for the District Courts comes amid continuing serious disruption of the work of the criminal courts. Many criminal defence solicitors withdrew their legal aid services in protest after the new one flat-fee payment model was introduced by the Minister, Jim O’Callaghan, on July 1st. The withdrawal has led to the adjournment of thousands of cases across all criminal court divisions with knock-on delays affecting crime victims, accused people, lawyers, judges, gardaí, court staff and those called for jury service. The escalation of the withdrawal last week to include custody cases has aggravated the disruption. The senior judge managing the Central Criminal Court lists has repeatedly warned solicitors they need court permission to cease representing an accused. O’Callaghan told the Oireachtas justice committee last week he had replied positively to…
