Argentina have been dealt significant injury blows ahead of the Nations Championship, with two players ruled out and another in doubt for their game against Ireland at the Aviva Stadium next Friday week. Felipe Contepomi has lost his brilliant utility back Santiago Carreras and prop Thomas Gallo, while Toulouse centre Santiago Chocobares is in doubt after suffering a head knock at the weekend.

Carreras, who has 70 Test caps, limped off in the 13th minute of Bath’s 23-5 defeat to his former club Gloucester on Friday and watched the remainder of the match on crutches. The Argentina international is due to undergo a scan to determine the extent of his lower-limb injury, which appears serious.

His place in the squad has been taken by Mateo Soler, who made his Test debut off the bench against the Wallabies last month. Gallo, capped 39 times, has also been withdrawn from the squad because of a wrist injury…

Minister for Justice to meet Law Society over legal aid row amid ongoing court disruption

A meeting on Wednesday between the Minister for Justice and the Law Society over a controversial criminal legal aid payments model for the District Courts comes amid continuing serious disruption of the work of the criminal courts. Many criminal defence solicitors withdrew their legal aid services in protest after the new one flat-fee payment model was introduced by the Minister, Jim O’Callaghan, on July 1st. The withdrawal has led to the adjournment of thousands of cases across all criminal court divisions with knock-on delays affecting crime victims, accused people, lawyers, judges, gardaí, court staff and those called for jury service. The escalation of the withdrawal last week to include custody cases has aggravated the disruption. The senior judge managing the Central Criminal Court lists has repeatedly warned solicitors they need court permission to cease representing an accused. O’Callaghan told the Oireachtas justice committee last week he had replied positively to…

Viable explosive device in package delivered to Derry hotel, police say

A suspicious package delivered to a hotel in Derry contained a viable explosive device, the PSNI has confirmed. The hotel at Ebrington Square was evacuated during the security alert on Tuesday afternoon, as were a number of neighbouring properties. A Halloween fun fair had been taking place in the area when the alert was first triggered at 3.20pm. Army ammunition technical officers attended the scene in the Waterside area of the city and carried out a controlled explosion on the package. Police have condemned what they described as a “reckless and targeted attack” that caused “significant disruption and distress” to the local community. The remnants of the package have been taken away for forensic examination. Northern Ireland justice minister Naomi Long described the incident as “shameful”. She said: “I condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms; it is abhorrent to think a viable device has been placed in the…

Judgment expected on challenge to Drumcree Orange Order parade ban

A judgment is expected to be handed down following a legal challenge to the decision by the Northern Ireland Secretary of State to ban the Drumcree Orange Order parade in Portadown. The Parades Commission granted permission earlier this year for the parade to complete its traditional route down the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road for the first time in almost 30 years. The move sparked large crowds to gather on the road in opposition to the parade returning to the former flashpoint that sparked serious disorder and violence in the 1990s. Police assessed that officers were unable to safely escort the parade along the Garvaghy Road while the crowds remained. Orange men stayed on Drumcree Hill and made a number of attempts to complete the parade by approaching the police line and making their case for almost two weeks. The Northern Ireland Secretary, Chris Bryant, banned the parade on October 9th…

Bank of Ireland raises 2026 income and capital guidance after strong growth

Bank of Ireland has again upgraded key financial targets for this year after positive growth in lending, deposits, and wealth assets. In an interim management statement covering the nine months to the end of September, the lender said that total consumer loans rose by €3.6 billion to €86.1 billion. Irish loans rose around 8 per cent, led by mortgages and lending to small businesses, while deposits were up 3 per cent to €110.3 billion and operating costs increased 2 per cent. The statement added that around 5 per cent loan book growth is expected in 2026, and the bank reaffirmed its key guidance issued earlier in the year. Statutory return on tangible equity is expected to be more than 14 per cent this year, and on track to rise above 16 per cent by 2028, the bank said. In July, Bank of Ireland upgraded most of its financial targets for…
