It has been a while since I raced through the dormitories of the St Louis Convent in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, terrified that a headless earl of Essex was following me. The spooky story was all we incarcerated teenagers talked about in the lead-up to our Halloween break home.

Of course, we didn’t know – or care less – that Robert Devereaux, the second earl of Essex, had been beheaded in the Tower of London in 1601, almost three decades before the castle was built by his son, the third earl. It was on the foundations of this castle the St Louis nuns began to build their convent and boarding school in 1888, and it was through these creaky corridors the decapitated nobleman followed me one night on my return from evening prayers.

I was 13 years old. It is easy to conjure such memories as the season of Samhain approaches…

More than time: watchmaker Nomadic secures top cross-border award

Peter McAuley learned that watches are about more than telling the time when he lost a watch left to him by a much-loved uncle deep beneath the waters of a Fermanagh lake during a day’s kayaking. On Wednesday, Nomadic Watches, the Belfast watchmaker run by McAuley and his wife, Jane, won the €150,000 gold award in this year’s North-South Business Cooperation Awards run by Greek-Cypriot billionaire, Stelios Haji-Ioannou.“I was always interested in watches. My dad had always got nice watches, and my uncle. When my uncle died, he left me a nice Tag Heuer, and I would wear it for everything. “I wore it on a kayaking trip in County Fermanagh. When I got back, the watch had fallen off my wrist in the water, and it was gone forever. That was when I realised that watches are about more than telling the time,” says McAuley. Beginning with models costing…

Bridesmaid-to-be feared missing sister’s wedding over new holiday policy at work

A bridesmaid-to-be has said she had a panic attack at work when her employer told her she would face a disciplinary meeting amid a row over taking annual leave for her sister’s wedding. Discount retail boss James Dungan, co-owner of the Jimmy’s Superstore chain, has denied at the Workplace Relations Commission that he ordered a disciplinary process this spring to penalise the worker, Rebecca Rowley, for a WRC complaint challenging the alleged imposition of new rules on holidays without prior notice. Rowley, a part-time shop worker with over three years’ service at the Jimmy’s Superstore in Carrick-On-Shannon, is pursuing complaints against operating company James Dungan Superstores Ltd under the Terms of Employment (Information) Act 1994, the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 and the Payment of Wages Act 1991. In evidence, she said that on January 21st, her supervisor said there were “new annual leave rules” as of the start…
