A woman has been charged with smuggling men into Ireland via Dublin Airport twice within two weeks. Daniela Rusescu (34), a Romanian national living in the UK, appeared before Dublin District Court after Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) officers arrested her at Terminal 1 in the airport on Saturday evening.

The 34-year-old, of Old Barn Court, Northampton, was held over the weekend and brought before Judge Áine Clancy on Monday. The judge noted that Det Cathal Brady of the GNIB was opposing bail, citing flight risk concerns.

Rusescu faces two counts under Section 6(1) of the Criminal Justice (Smuggling of Persons) Act 2021 for assisting a man to enter the State on October 10th and again on October 24th of this year. The accused was stopped just after 8.30pm following the arrival of a flight from Barcelona, Spain.

Dodge City by Patrick deWitt: a wise novel that contains the best insult you’ll hear all year

The Vietnam War still haunts the American psyche. Did you earn your spurs by signing up or did you dodge the draft via a bony bump on the ankle, a very different type of spur? That’s a variant on the existential dilemma facing Lee Clarke, the anti-hero of Patrick deWitt’s fine new novel, his sixth. Lee heads for Canada, pressed, as his oracular Uncle Wallace concludes, “to accept that which you could not accept, and you did not accept …” Lee, a one-time student of land surveying at UCLA, is a soul brother to Kafka’s K caught in similar thrall to the state, his problem being army inclusion as opposed to castle exclusion. He journeys across America from west to east, “Manifest Destiny in reverse”, steering a spanking-new racing green E-type Jaguar, a drive-away deal, intent on saying goodbye to his extended family. Dodge City is thus a road novel…

An unmanageable club? Carrick the latest to suffer in Manchester United’s faded grandeur

Should any club fit the Great Man theory of history, it is Manchester United. In the past 100 years, only Matt Busby and Alex Ferguson have knocked the club into shape. A pair of 20th-century Scotsmen, born 15 miles apart in Bellshill and Govan respectively, found the key. Otherwise, United has been a managerial dustbin, Michael Carrick the latest likely lobbed on the pile.Busby and Ferguson built the club around themselves, possessing the charisma to convince others that theirs was the path to follow. Carrick, an insider, a club man, is falling victim to the same isolation as his predecessors in failure. Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martínez going off-piste in TV interviews to depth charge Carrick were actually following club tradition. With glamour comes decadence, the faded grandeur that has so often chased a United manager out the door.Beyond Busby and Ferguson, each United manager who also served felt the…
