Gardaí arrested 195 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs over the October bank holiday weekend. A Garda roads policing operation started on Thursday, October 22nd, and it will conclude on Tuesday, October 27th.

There were three fatal collisions over the weekend, bringing the total number of people killed on Irish roads this year to 154. Both statutory mandatory intoxicant testing checkpoints and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints were carried out.

To date under this operation, a total of 195 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (alcohol and drugs). Just over 4,190 drivers were detected for speeding offences during the first four days of the operation.

Notable speeds included 100km/h in a 50km/h zone on Church Road, Carndonagh, Co Donegal, and 159km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R178 at Dundalk, Co Louth. Others included a driver clocked at 135km/h in a 100km/h zone on the…

Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties yet again to secure Carabao Cup quarter-final spot

Carabao Cup: Liverpool 1 (Gakpo 43 pen) Chelsea 1 (Rogers 40 pen) – Liverpool win 6-5 on penaltiesChelsea must have known their fate as soon as the last 16 tie at Anfield went to penalties. Four times they had faced Liverpool in a penalty shoot-out previously and four times they had lost. Make that five, after Wesley Fofana’s woeful attempt sailed high into the Kop and sent Andoni Iraola’s side into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. The defender was not the only culprit as Chelsea’s catalogue of penalty misery against Liverpool gained a new chapter to add to the 2007 Champions League semi final, the 2019 Uefa Super Cup final and the FA and League Cup finals of 2022. Emmanuel Emegha could have won it for Xabi Alonso’s visitors but his effort was saved superbly by Giorgi Mamardashvili. Kostas Tsimikas could also have reprised his match-winning role from Wembley in 2022…

The Future with Hannah Fry on BBC Two: Just as humans stuck gorillas in zoos, could AI do the same to us?

Hannah Fry was hopeless on Celebrity Traitors, where all of her scientific discipline and boffin’s aura evaporated the moment she was made a Traitor and had to go around back-stabbing her fellow A-listers. But she is on firmer ground with the agreeably informative yet informal second series of The Future with Hannah Fry (BBC Two, 7.30pm), where she ditches her Traitor’s cape and once again tackles the big science issues of the day. These subjects include the suddenly quite-terrifying issue of AI. In the previous season, she investigated the chilling subject of chatbots, and had a very weird encounter with a man who had constructed an AI bot based on a dead parent, so that he could continue to converse with them from beyond the grave. That was Black Mirror with rocket jets attached – and it had the usually level-headed Fry in tears of shock and mild horror. That…

Fed holds US interest rates ahead of midterm elections

The US Federal Reserve has kept interest rates on hold days before midterm elections even as the surge in fuel prices sparked by the Iran war reverberates across the world’s biggest economy. Most of the rate-setters on the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee of the US’s central bank on Wednesday said they needed “more information” before deciding what to do “to ensure a timely return of inflation” to their 2 per cent goal, after holding the federal funds rate within a range of 3.75 per cent to 4 per cent. The decision to hold came after a 10-to-two vote, with two members favouring a quarter point rise in rates. The committee acknowledged economic activity was “expanding at a strong pace”, signalling mounting concern the economy is in danger of overheating from the AI boom. The decision, which was widely expected by Wall Street, comes despite fresh evidence that inflation is…

‘We’ve got a bit of work to do’: Nations Championship a test for Ireland’s World Cup ambitions

As a player, Johnny Sexton experienced going into World Cups both with and without high expectations. Although the outcome was the same dog-eared script of a quarter-final exit, he has little doubt that going with hope if preferable. So while the Nations Championship and Six Nations are desirable targets in their own right, they also serve as a lead-in to the next year’s World Cup Australia. The Nations Championship resumes next week, with Ireland kicking off the northern series against Argentina at the Aviva Stadium on November 6th. They then host Fiji and South Africa, after which their ranking will determine what playoff they will contest during the finals weekend in Twickenham, which will take place on November 27th-29th. The Ireland assistant coach certainly spoke with his master’s voice in outlining the target for the next month.“As a team, we want to win the next three games and be in…
