It could be an unforgettable few weeks for Fleetwood Town’s ownership after they shocked Premier League champions Arsenal, winning in a penalty shoot-out in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night to advance to the quarter-finals. Fleetwood have an Irish link with Waterford FC, who will play in the FAI Cup final against Derry City on Sunday week, part of Fleetwood’s multi-club model The Willows 96 Holdings Limited.

Things have not always been plain sailing in that partnership as in 2023, the former owner of the company, Andrew Pilley, was convicted of fraud and sentenced to 13 years in prison. Forced to resign as director, he relinquished control to his son Jamie in 2024.

Earlier this year, Jamie Pilley reaffirmed his commitment to Waterford, who are reliant on Fleetwood financially. They lost €944,944 in 2025, despite Fleetwood writing off €1.5 million the Irish club owed it, according to reporting from journalist…

Overheated hospitals pose a big danger

Sir, – I am weary from listening to reports about hospital overspending by millions of euro. We are told that our health services are in bad shape financially. One way of reducing these crippling overheads is blindingly obvious. Simply reduce the temperature. Every medical facility a person enters nowadays resembles a sauna. This level of heat is totally unnecessary and is in fact quite dangerous for patients and staff alike. Hospital overheating is a big danger that directly encourages bacteria to multiply and increases the risk of serious patient infections. It also results in staff fatigue, and working in such an environment impacts staff health. So, please, please, please turn down the heat. – Yours, etc,ANTOINETTE DWYER,Old Kildimo,Co Limerick.

Farewell to ‘aeroplane mode’: Flying loses its status as the last internet black hole

Back in 1997, an episode of Seinfeld introduced the world to a unique approach to long-haul travel. David Puddy, played by Patrick Warburton, the boyfriend of Elaine Benes (Julia Louis Dreyfus), decided he would just stare at the back of the seat in front of him for the whole flight. No television, no movies, no headphones, no books, not even a nap. He was going to sit upright, eyes-open, and stare straight ahead for what was meant to be a very long trip. Although this was wild even to contemplate almost three decades ago, it isn’t viewed in quite so simple a light today. Is airplane mode really just a setting on your phone? That’s the philosophical question that has moved to the foreground in recent days. On Monday, EasyJet announced it would install Elon Musk’s Starlink internet across its fleet during the first half of next year, with roll-out…

Palestinian student visas and scholasticide

Sir, – To get a long-study visa to study in Ireland, a student must provide evidence of, among other things, their educational history, their proficiency in English, their funding for the duration of their studies and their commitment to return to their home country. These requirements seem reasonable and fair until they are applied to Gazan students whose houses, schools, banks and universities have been, in most cases, razed to the ground. Genocide and famine have ravaged Gaza but, despite this, many Gazan students created complete visa applications to study in Ireland commencing last September. Despite their complete applications, and the fact that they had secured scholarships and academic places at Irish universities, many were refused long-study visas. In some cases, the refusal was based on decisions containing what Judge Anthony Barr ruled were “significant and demonstrable errors on the part of the decision maker”. Taoiseach Micheál Martin addressed the…

Shay McCarthy aiming to seize his chance with ‘exciting’ Munster

The trial with Brighton and Hove Albion never happened. Shay McCarthy was 15 when he was due to travel to England for an opportunity with the Premier League club, but a broken ankle intervened. He never received another call. It was a setback that helped leave the way open for a career that is now, finally, beginning to gather momentum with Munster. The Limerick native had been playing with Fairview Rangers and the Limerick District Schoolboy League, winning All-Ireland honours at both club and schoolboy level. Limerick FC also expressed an interest, but he was reluctant to pursue a career in the League of Ireland. Growing older, the practicalities of balancing several sports began to take their toll.“I played all sports. I played soccer, I played hurling, I played Gaelic football and then you can only sacrifice so many nights a week to whatever,” McCarthy said. “I got older and…
