A 92-year-old man has been found guilty of eight counts of indecent assault more than 50 years ago against two orphaned children to whom he was a “quasi-father figure”. A jury at Ennis Circuit Court on Wednesday returned unanimous guilty verdicts on the eight counts of indecent assault, which were alleged to have happened on dates between July 1st, 1973 and January 31st, 1975.

The sisters were aged between eight and 10 years during that time, with six counts relating to the older sister and two to the younger. Their parents had died by the time they were aged five and four and they eventually came into the care of the accused and his wife in the early 1970s.

Prosecution barrister Sarah Jane Comerford told the trial the man was a “quasi-father figure” to the vulnerable girls at the time he “perpetrated these offences” against them. The man previously paid…

Music Against The Night by Yiyun Li: A dense and complex novel worth taking time over

“Sweeping” is overused to describe historical fiction, yet by the time you finish Music Against the Night, the word won’t seem expansive enough. Opening in Smolensk, Russa, in February 1837 and February 1860, the novel takes in Pondicherry at the end of the 18th and start of the 19th centuries, in addition to Paris, Bath, London, Cazaubon (and more). Yiyun Li begins with John Field’s death, which “would never be natural – few musicians would have that luxury”. His wife, Adelaide, is not with him, because she was banished from his life decades earlier. From that sturdy opening, Li slips back in time to Dublin in July 1782, as Robert and Grace Field welcome their second-born son, John, “who would become their first child”. The previous summer, another John had died at two days old. From a young age, the music in John’s blood is obvious to them all, for…

Meet the Irish AI app aiming to end the chaos of organising family life

James Foskin left school at 17 and went straight into the workforce. He spent a decade in customer-facing roles across different sectors before someone told him about a new company setting up in Ireland. It turned out to be PayPal, and Foskin was one of its first employees. He subsequently spent just over 20 years with the company, progressing up the ladder to director level. In 2025, Foskin left PayPal to set up TiAiMe: the name stands for Ti (time), Ai (the AI engine), Me (the priority person). It’s a life co-ordination platform designed for today’s time-pressed adults who wear multiple hats as parents, carers, professionals, diary coordinators, housekeepers and kids’ taxi. He got the idea from watching work colleagues struggle to manage their busy lives and from seeing his wife try to keep a dozen different balls in the air when their son was ill and needed a lot…

Liam Scales on target as Celtic settle for a point against Dundee

Scottish Premiership: Celtic 2 (Durán 18, Scales 65) Dundee United (Sapsford 28, Farrugia 31)Celtic showed their mettle as they fought back to grab a 2-2 draw against determined Dundee United at Parkhead. Colombian striker Camilo Durán put the home side ahead in the 18th minute with his 11th goal of the season and it looked like a routine win was on its way. However, Australian forward Zac Sapsford levelled in the 28th minute with a header before defender Neil Farrugia forced the visitors ahead three minutes later with his first Dundee goal. Martin O’Neill’s side piled forward in the second half and Republic of Ireland international Liam Scales equalised in the 64th minute with a header but despite almost constant pressure the league leaders had to settle for a point. Jim Goodwin’s side arrived in good form, unbeaten in five games, but one damning Dundee statistic remains intact; the Taysiders…
