I don’t like autumn, but these wines will help me get through it

I’ll be honest; I don’t like autumn. Give me the fresh shoots of spring any day. But it does give us the opportunity to enjoy some great autumnal foods and the wines to go with them. The food we eat takes on more weight and warmth. I certainly drink different wines too. My consumption of red wines increases over the cooler months, and I don’t mind an extra percentage point of warming alcohol on some of the cold nights. I drink fewer light crisp dry whites and instead look for richer, more textured white wines too. I also allow myself a few more treats – either a warming Irish whiskey or a glass of fortified wine. I move from drinking crisp dry fino sherry to a bigger, more full-bodied dry Amontillado filled with toasted nuts and tobacco. Today, I include two distinctive white wines. I have featured the Laurent Miquel…

Róisín Ingle: Halloween is not what it used to be and that’s no harm

At a friend’s birthday party recently, I got talking to a man about my broken dishwasher. Party chat can take you to all sorts of unexpected places. I can’t remember why I mentioned the dishwasher in the first place. I must have been desperate. I get bored easily and usually try to elevate Small Talk to Big Talk as soon as possible but sometimes “my dishwasher is broken”, which might be described as Middle of the Road Talk, works too. It turned out to be an unexpectedly rich seam on this occasion. The dishwasher had broken that morning. After preparing a post-sleepover brunch of bacon, eggs, sausages and beans, I asked four teenagers to unload and then load it again, and somewhere in the course of this activity a part fell off the dishwasher and the top shelf got stuck. The dishwasher wouldn’t close and the prospect of washing dishes…

One night in a haunted Irish castle: I try not to make eye contact with the taxidermy otter

Just as I notice the Welcome to Co Meath sign, a song starts playing on the car stereo. An algorithm has just plucked Dusty Springfield’s Spooky from my partner’s random playlist of liked songs. “That is spooky,” he says. We’re driving up to Ross Castle on a Saturday evening; the roads are quiet, and long and winding once we leave the motorway, as day slowly turns to dusk. There’s a sudden atmospheric change as we turn on to the final narrow stretch before our destination: the sky turns grey; rain starts spitting from above and wind rustles the branches of the trees along the roadside. All that is missing is a bolt of lightning to complete the title sequence for an old horror movie, as an unsuspecting couple trundle towards a secluded country castle. We arrive in the last moments of daylight to see the limestone walls of the towering…

Life Out of Order by Audrey Niffenegger: Ambitious follow-up to the Time Traveler’s Wife

Fourteen years after her debut novel, The Time Traveler’s Wife, sold nine million copies globally and became a Hollywood movie, Niffenegger has finally written its sequel. The sci-fi romance that catapulted the author into literary superstardom introduced the world to Henry, a man born with a genetic disorder that makes him a reluctant time traveller, and his long-suffering great love, Clare. The debut had depth, artistry and literary sensibilities that elevated its status to become one of the books of the decade. Niffenegger is a professor, a visual artist and deep thinker with an eccentric creative impulse that was further evidenced in the work that followed, such as Her Fearful Symmetry and the creepy illustrated gothic novel, The Three Incestuous Sisters. As such, if, as sales suggest, the devotees of her debut have not been reading Niffenegger in the intervening years, they may be in for a shock with the…
