Counting the cost of a renewable grid

Sir, – We are often told how cheap renewable electricity sources are, even while the price we pay goes up. Barry O’Halloran’s excellent article (“Breaking down the bill: where does the money for your electricity go?”, Business, October 30th) goes some way towards explaining this paradox. A big part of the cost of our electricity now goes to pay for the increasingly complex system of wires needed to bring power from the generators to our homes and another €18 billion will need to be spent over the next three years to further improve this system. This is the hidden cost of adapting the grid to run on many disparate, scattered and largely unpredictable sources of renewable energy. In the debate over nuclear power, the upfront construction costs are often raised. An overlooked advantage is that, as nuclear is a large single and dependable source of power, no expensive electricity grid…

Why are interest rates so high – and how exposed is Ireland?

Over the past few weeks, political unrest in France has led to a sharp rise in the interest rates the French government must pay on new borrowing. Cork group linked to emergency accommodation centres doubles profit to €15m

John Crean and Tony O’Neill’s Peppard Investments, which is involved in the provision of emergency accommodation, more than doubled its profit to €15 million last year. The Cork-based group led by Crean and O’Neill has interests spanning property development, nursing homes and emergency accommodation centres. Newly filed consolidated accounts for their group by Peppard Investment Holdings Limited showed their network of 23 Irish companies reported combined turnover of €29.2 million last year, an increase of 17 per cent compared with 2024. The group’s pretax profits more than doubled to €16.5 million in the year after it received an additional €9 million of income from a joint venture involved in emergency accommodation in 2025 called Kintrona Limited. Following a tax expense of almost €1.2 million, Crean and O’Neill’s group booked a final after-tax profit of €15.2 million, up from €6.1 million the year previous. The pair behind the property development company…
