Stewart, knighted in 2010 by Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions to drama, died at his home in Los Angeles, according to a statement on ‌his X account.“We announce with great sorrow the passing of Patrick Stewart yesterday at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia,” it said.

Joanne McNally played a blinder on The Celebrity Traitors. Here are 15 of her best lines

So near, yet so far. Joanne McNally, having played a blinder throughout, has come a cropper in the penultimate episode of The Celebrity Traitors. Banished at the round table after YouTuber (and traitor) King Kenny switched his vote, the Irish comedian is no longer in the running to win money for her chosen charity in the BBC show’s endgame. But by understanding the assignment, proving excellent value for viewers and securing airtime in nine out of a maximum of 10 episodes in this ratings juggernaut, she won anyway. Along the way, she wasn’t afraid to showcase her “performative stupidity” – her self-declared strategy for survival – as she outlined a series of incorrect game theories. But on this show, being wrong can be a canny self-protection mechanism that reduces your chances of being murdered because you’re a “threat”. Cast as a faithful, the stand-up and podcaster also quickly decided that…

Fine Gael grassroots seek ardfheis motion to confirm ‘centre right’ status

A group of Fine Gael members are pushing for the party to affirm its “centre-right” status in an effort to distinguish it from what one describes as the “woke left”. A draft motion has gained support from some branches and constituencies, and has been submitted to headquarters for consideration for inclusion on the agenda for the Fine Gael Ardfheis being held on November 7th and 8th. It asks the assembly to affirm Fine Gael as a “centre-right party, in the European Christian Democratic tradition”. A document urging support for the motion, which has been circulated among members, argues that occupying the centre right is a “bulwark against the far right and populism”. The motion is understood to have been authored at grassroots level and signed by councillors, as well as being approved by several branches and constituency organisations. The group of members which has been seeking support from the party’s…

Rank-and-file gardaí to engage in work-to-rule during EU presidency meetings next month

Rank-and-file gardaí are to engage in a work-to-rule action for five days next month during EU presidency meetings. Following a meeting of the Garda Representative Association’s (GRA) central executive committee on Thursday, members were told they would be moving to a work-to-rule position on November 10th-14th. The action will coincide with the European Political Community meeting in Dublin on November 12th, as well as an informal meeting of the EU heads of state or government the following day. GRA general secretary Ronan Slevin said further action was possible as it was “clear that our members’ working terms and conditions, including subsistence and travel entitlements, are being deliberately eroded”.“The GRA’s executive will now meet on Monday morning, accompanied by their legal counsel, to discuss this position and further accelerated actions right up to and including a withdrawal of services,” he told members. Meanwhile, in a statement issued by Garda headquarters on…

‘It’s up to us’: Government must work inside EU to smooth path for possible British return

The Republic must work behind the scenes inside the European Union to make sure Britain has a “pathway to re-entry” to the bloc, a Government Minister has said.“It is up to us,” said Neale Richmond, Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs.“Britain wants a closer relationship with the EU. Maybe they want to rejoin,” said Richmond, speaking in London on Thursday after a diaspora event at the Irish embassy.“If they do want a closer relationship, it rests on our [the State’s] shoulders to make that as easy as possible within the EU. We have to make sure that, around the European Council table, we are keen and eager [for Britain to return].”British prime minister Andy Burnham, a long-time critic of his country leaving the EU, has reopened the debate in recent months by suggesting Britain could eventually seek to reverse Brexit. He has also suggested Britain could accept…
