Almost 140 people have been arrested at the largest mass demonstrations under Andy Burnham’s premiership opposing the proscription of Palestine Action. Hundreds of people gathered outside the US embassy in Battersea, south London, holding signs that read: “I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action.” Demonstrators also held a vigil in support of the group outside the US consulate in Edinburgh.

Before the London gathering, the Metropolitan Police warned those taking part “that they face arrest as part of a robust policing operation” and that anyone “playing a key role in organising the event, giving instructions to others and/or providing logistical support” would probably be committing an offence. In a statement on X, the Metropolitan Police said: “139 people have now been arrested.

Officers remain on scene and are continuing to make arrests.”Commander Adam Slonecki, who led the policing operation, said: “All those intending on coming to this event know that…

Democrats show strength in final days of race for US senate – polls

Democrats are ahead of Republicans in almost all of the seven battleground states that will determine which party controls the US senate, according to a final set of polls before Tuesday’s midterm elections. The New York Times and Siena University surveys found that Democrats hold sizeable leads in Texas, which has not elected a Democrat to the senate since 1988, and Kansas, which has not elected one since 1932. To win a senate majority, Democrats need to defend all the seats they currently hold and flip at least four seats currently held by Republicans. They hold leads in Kansas, Maine, Ohio and Texas and a narrow edge…
