Binyamin Netanyahu has failed to win the general election in Israel, but the formation of a new government will be complicated. In the meantime, he remains dangerous.

Down but not quite outSoon after the polls closed and vote projections pointed to a close contest between the two main Zionist blocs, opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot urged Israel’s security establishment to “serve the state and the interests of Israeli citizens alone”. And he warned Netanyahu against attempting to cling to power through war.“Don’t you dare use Israel’s security for your own political gain,” he said.

As our correspondent Mark Weiss reports, the result offers Netanyahu no clear path to power. But he remains caretaker prime minister until someone succeeds in putting together a coalition that can command a majority in the Knesset.

A return to war with Iran or an escalation of Israel’s military operation in Lebanon could produce the kind of…

Mississippi turning? Democrats point to Republican ‘panic’ as Donald Trump flies in

It’s 3pm so the staff in Borroum’s Drug Store are sweeping the floor and wiping the counters. Closing time here has been midafternoon since the 1920s but on this Monday, the town is deserted anyway. Everyone has gone out as far as the Crossroads Arena, on the east edge of the town, to wait for Donald Trump. Well, most people have.“I’m not,” Lesley Lancaster says decisively when asked whether she will be going to the presidential rally.“No. I don’t like crowds. I’m not waiting in line for nothing. I don’t have patience. But I think there’s a tonne of people out there. We are like five minutes from the Tennessee state line too. I was wondering why he chose Corinth out of all of Mississippi. But this was the crossroads for the civil war. Those train tracks I’m sure you crossed over: that was the front line.”Lancaster is the latest…

Mercedes bets on model blitz as China slump deepens

Mercedes-Benz Group is pushing ahead with its biggest product and cost overhaul in years, betting it can restore profitability even as China turns from a growth engine into one of the biggest drags on the business. Third-quarter revenue at the German automaker fell 4.5 per cent to €30.7 billion, while adjusted group earnings before interest and tax declined 15 per cent, the group said Wednesday in a statement. The results came a day after Mercedes lowered its outlook, citing cost pressures and a drop in sales in the mainland. Chief executive officer Ola Källenius pointed to continued growth in Europe and the US, as well as record electric-vehicle sales, as evidence that newer models are gaining traction. At the same time, he said market conditions had become “even more challenging”, particularly in China. At its core cars division, adjusted earnings more than halved to €560 million in the third quarter,…

Coalition talks loom as Israel exit polls suggest Netanyahu and Eisenkot blocs tied

Israel could be in for weeks of political haggling after exit polls and partial official election results showed neither Binyamin Netanyahu’s coalition nor the opposition bloc led by former general Gadi Eisenkot had won enough seats to form a government. The polls published by Israel’s major TV networks show Netanyahu’s governing bloc either tied or nearly tied with the opposition grouping led by Eisenkot on around 51 seats each, short of the 61 seats needed to form a majority coalition government. Speaking at 3am local time, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister vowed to assemble a coalition through agreements between his Likud party, far-right factions and Jewish religious parties.“We must put in place a strong government of the right,” Netanyahu told cheering supporters. “The Jewish and Zionist majority must unite.”Eisenkot, speaking to his own supporters in Tel Aviv, said earlier in the evening that “people decided in favour of change” and Netanyahu…

A £3 bonus for triplets – Government to wind up century-old contingency fund

The Government is to wind down a contingency fund established in 1923 and previously used to pay a “bounty” to the parents of triplets and to reimburse Dublin Corporation for the cost of sending fire brigades to Belfast during the second World War. Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers will brief Cabinet on plans to wind down the fund, which holds €1.2 million and has not been used for 22 years. It was established to pay for unexpected expenses – with an initial budget of £20,000 for costs not covered by normal allocations – although it was also used, Dáil records show, for a £3 bounty to the parents of triplets. In 1930 it was also used to reimburse the government representative for expenses incurred in travelling to the funeral of French general Marshal Ferdinand Foch, and for advances towards the expenses incurred by the British vice-consul at Suez “in…
