Just two days before Tuesday’s election, prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving leader who turned 77 a few days ago, posted an AI-generated image depicting a nuclear explosion in Tel Aviv, warning the public that voting for anyone other than him could expose the country to the danger of a “second Holocaust”. In a separate interview on the same day, he warned that US aid to Israel wouldn’t continue for long, and due to an expected surge in international sanctions his country would be forced to trade using cryptocurrency, following the example of the world’s worst dictatorships.

His doomsday scenarios painted a picture of a panic-stricken leader finding it difficult to come to terms with the polls that show his coalition of right-wing and religious parties will fall significantly short of the 61 seats required for a parliamentary majority. In fact, the polls have shown very little change at all during the election…

Israel’s election: when will we know the next prime minister?

Israelis headed to the polls on Tuesday in the highest turnout in more than a quarter-century for what many say was one of the most consequential elections in the country’s 78-year history. Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu, the country’s longest-serving leader, his party, Likud, and his far-right governing coalition were locked in a tight contest with opposition parties in the country’s first election since the Hamas-led assault on October 7th, 2023, that ignited Israel’s devastating war in the Gaza Strip. In Israel’s parliamentary democracy, every party creates a ranked list of its candidates, and voters choose a party or slate. The leader of the party or list with the most votes could become the country’s next prime minister — though it is not automatic — if that candidate can form a government, but the process is complicated and involves extensive negotiations. Here’s what to know. What happened on election day?…

Luxury cruise ship that left Ireland two years ago strands passengers in Cambodia

Passengers on a luxury residential ship that set off from Belfast two yeas ago to tour the world were unexpectedly stranded in Cambodia after the cruise company suspended operations, citing “extraordinary increases” in fuel costs. Villa Vie Residences is “working with residents to co-ordinate disembarkation and identify temporary living arrangements”, it said in a statement on Tuesday. While the company is covering lodging and local transportation, it hasn’t provided funding for passengers to depart Cambodia, where the 650-passenger Odyssey is now moored, Villa Vie founder Mikael Petterson said during a telephone interview. About 200 residents were on board when the company was forced to ask them to disembark, he said. The company’s fuel costs have risen more than 300 per cent since the start of US-Israel war on Iran, Villa Vie said, with per-cabin fuel costs that had historically averaged about $1,800 (€1,600) a month surging to as much as…

Mississippi turning? Democrats point to Republican ‘panic’ as Donald Trump flies in

It’s 3pm so the staff in Borroum’s Drug Store are sweeping the floor and wiping the counters. Closing time here has been midafternoon since the 1920s but on this Monday, the town is deserted anyway. Everyone has gone out as far as the Crossroads Arena, on the east edge of the town, to wait for Donald Trump. Well, most people have.“I’m not,” Lesley Lancaster says decisively when asked whether she will be going to the presidential rally.“No. I don’t like crowds. I’m not waiting in line for nothing. I don’t have patience. But I think there’s a tonne of people out there. We are like five minutes from the Tennessee state line too. I was wondering why he chose Corinth out of all of Mississippi. But this was the crossroads for the civil war. Those train tracks I’m sure you crossed over: that was the front line.”Lancaster is the latest…

Mercedes bets on model blitz as China slump deepens

Mercedes-Benz Group is pushing ahead with its biggest product and cost overhaul in years, betting it can restore profitability even as China turns from a growth engine into one of the biggest drags on the business. Third-quarter revenue at the German automaker fell 4.5 per cent to €30.7 billion, while adjusted group earnings before interest and tax declined 15 per cent, the group said Wednesday in a statement. The results came a day after Mercedes lowered its outlook, citing cost pressures and a drop in sales in the mainland. Chief executive officer Ola Källenius pointed to continued growth in Europe and the US, as well as record electric-vehicle sales, as evidence that newer models are gaining traction. At the same time, he said market conditions had become “even more challenging”, particularly in China. At its core cars division, adjusted earnings more than halved to €560 million in the third quarter,…
