Brandon Flowers3Olympia Theatre, Dublin★★★★★Brandon Flowers is in Dublin to perform material from his country-rock themed new album Thrasher – but two-thirds of the way through this riotous concert that plan is chucked out the window and he goes for broke with a murderously enjoyable Killers greatest hits set. Experienced in the comparatively intimate environs of The Olympia, it’s a thrill to see a master of arena rock still so excited by his own hits.

Flowers rips through the Springsteen-esque two-hander of When You Were Young and Read My Mind and then charges, at full pelt, into the great terrace anthem of the 21st century, Mr Brightside. How can he not be bored with this song by now?

But somehow he is not, as, with one foot on the edge of the stage, he leads the audience through that surging verse and then headlong into a chorus that remains almost supernaturally…

Drones hit another container ship off Bulgaria, defence minister says

Sea drones struck a container ship ‌off Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast on Wednesday, defence minister Dimitar Stoyanov said, the ‌latest in a string of attacks that have raised fears about the growing scope of Russia’s war in Ukraine. It was not clear who carried out the attack on a Greek container ship that was sailing under the Liberian flag in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone. A maritime security source with knowledge of the matter said the crew had been evacuated. Bulgaria’s national ‌radio said a tanker was sent to assist the damaged vessel, which was travelling from Israel’s port of Haifa to Constanța in Romania. The ship’s Greece-based owner and manager Contships Management did not immediately respond to a ‌request for comment.“A container ship was hit ... with three naval drones, approximately 21 miles southeast of Shabla,” Stoyanov told reporters on the sidelines of a regional security meeting. TikTok’s Irish arm cuts headcount by 600 as legal provisions rise to more than €900m

TikTok’s Irish arm reduced its headcount by more than a fifth last year to around 2,100 staff, while the company’s provisions for legal and regulatory matters rose to $1.03 billion (€923.8 million). The video-sharing platform notified the Government of plans to let go of hundreds of staff from its Dublin operation last year. New accounts published by the firm’s Irish subsidiary, TikTok Technology Limited, showed the business’s average monthly headcount fell by 600 to 2,108 by the end of 2025. No details on severance payments to staff were included in the filing. Staff costs fell from $245.7 million to $221.9 million as the Irish operation’s headcount was cut. In the same period, combined pay to TikTok’s Irish-based directors – Cormac Keenan, Elaine McGovern and Adam Presser – rose from $899,000 to more than $1 million. Reports in recent months indicated staff at the Dublin office faced a new round of…

Dave Hannigan: Baseball on brink of chaos as billionaire owners say players earn too much

Earlier this month, Major League Baseball issued a 34-page memo containing a very specific set of contingency plans for this coming winter. Images and videos of current stars are to be temporarily scrubbed from team websites and club executives can only attend players’ weddings if they undertake not to talk about the game with guests. The same officials must not send Christmas or holiday cards of any kind to squad members, cannot discuss contracts with their agents and need to ensure all training facilities are closed. These bizarre instructions covering every aspect of club business are to be carried out if the owners and players cannot, as now seems likely, agree on a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) by 11.59pm on December 1st. The gloomy prospect of a lockout potentially wiping out the 2027 season is why the unsavoury stench of industrial dispute hung over the World Series between the…

Public sector pay deal will include reform and productivity measures, Jack Chambers says

The Government will want reform and productivity measures as part of any new pay deal for State employees, the Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers has said. He said this had been a standard part of such public service pay agreements for years. Speaking at an event in Dunboyne, Co Meath, the Minister said the trade unions understood this. “So, there will be proposals around reform and productivity, and they’ll be discussed, and hopefully agreed between all sides, as well as agreement on a wider public sector pay deal itself,” Chambers said. Following a strike involving about 300,000 public service staff earlier this month, talks on a new pay deal have been under way between unions and officials of the Department of Public Expenditure since last week. Speaking on Wednesday, Chambers said very intensive discussions were taking place at the Workplace Relations Commission. “The Government is clear we want to…
