Bulmers owner C&C Group increased sales of its own brands in the first half, but a decline in distribution revenue contributed to group sales falling below €800 million for the six-month period. A new trading update from the company said group net revenue fell 3 per cent to €794.9 million for the half-year that ended in August.

During the period, branded revenue grew by 3 per cent due to “momentum in Tennent’s and Bulmers” sales, favourable summer weather and a boost linked to the Fifa World Cup. Distribution revenue fell 4 per cent as a result of C&C Group’s planned exit from some lower-margin customer business and “continued pressure” on certain drinks categories.

C&C’s operating profit rose 4 per cent to €43.4 million despite the decline in revenue, while the group reported underlying free cash flow was up 18 per cent to €36.9 million, compared to €31.2 million for the…

Minister and Law Society agree on ‘focused’ engagement aimed at resolving legal aid row

The Minister for Justice and the Law Society have agreed on an engagement process aimed at resolving the dispute over a new criminal legal aid payment scheme for the District Courts. The “short, focused” engagement involving representatives from the Department of Justice and the society will begin on Friday and continue next week, the department said in a statement on Wednesday. Statements from the department and the society were issued shortly after a delegation from the society, led by its president Rosemarie Loftus, met Jim O’Callaghan for about an hour on Wednesday morning. The department said the parties discussed the operation of the new criminal legal aid regulations – introduced on July 1st – and the withdrawal of services by some solicitors, “which is impacting the operation of certain criminal courts”. It said the Minister and the society “agreed on the need for a short, focused engagement between their representatives…

Is English a foreign language?

Sir, – I read with interest your article headlined “‘The focus is finding people from Ireland’: The EU’s big ask for new English translators,” (Business, October 26th). It is noted in the article that Ireland has the lowest proportion of secondary school students who study two or more foreign languages. Is English not technically a foreign language? In Ireland, most secondary school students study either French, German or Spanish in addition to English and our native Irish. If English were to be correctly classified as a foreign language, then the statement that Ireland has the lowest proportion of teenagers who study two or more foreign languages would not hold true. – Yours, etc, THOMAS HAYDEN,Carrickmines,Dublin.
