Children being denied legal representation is yet another shameful failure by the State

We have had State apologies issued to children and their families for the worst episodes of the Government failing in its duty of care. And in recent weeks we have heard story after story, case after case, of deeply concerning failings towards children.

The criminal justice pay dispute that has dragged into its fourth month is now affecting children and young people, leaving those in need of legal aid completely adrift and cases postponed. The failure to provide legal representation is a serious rights violation, but also in the absence of a youth justice agency in Ireland it deprives these young people of a vital support.

Their lawyers do far more than paperwork. They may be the…

Conference on good jobs hears Government’s abandonment of living wage ‘shameful’

The Government’s abandonment of its commitment to adopting the living wage as the minimum that can be paid to adult workers has been described as “shameful” at an event organised to highlight the importance of “quality jobs”. Minister for State with responsibility for Employment Alan Dillon told the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (Ictu) event in Dublin that the challenge “was no longer simply how many jobs we create”. It was whether they were “good jobs that pay fairly and provide workers with opportunities to learn, develop and progress ... jobs that give people confidence about the future”, he said. Dillon said several measures had been introduced to make work “more inclusive and sustainable” and that “we’re also very much committed to improving wages”. He noted a recently announced 5 per cent increase to the National Minimum Wage, which is to rise to €14.94 per hour in January. The related…

Minister and Law Society agree on ‘focused’ engagement aimed at resolving legal aid row

The Minister for Justice and the Law Society have agreed on an engagement process aimed at resolving the dispute over a new criminal legal aid payment scheme for the District Courts. The “short, focused” engagement involving representatives from the Department of Justice and the society will begin on Friday and continue next week, the department said in a statement on Wednesday. Statements from the department and the society were issued shortly after a delegation from the society, led by its president Rosemarie Loftus, met Jim O’Callaghan for about an hour on Wednesday morning. The department said the parties discussed the operation of the new criminal legal aid regulations – introduced on July 1st – and the withdrawal of services by some solicitors, “which is impacting the operation of certain criminal courts”. It said the Minister and the society “agreed on the need for a short, focused engagement between their representatives…
