I didn’t get to see George Michael’s Faith tour. Can a new concert film make up for that?

As deceptively simple opening lyrics to pop songs go, George Michael’s “Well, I guess it would be nice if I could touch your body” is up there with the best. It sounds as if he’s being politely forward, but it turns out that Faith, his 1987 hit, is about resolving not to touch the person he’s addressing because there’s an emotional penalty attached.

This classic is one reason why I’m in the market for next week’s release of George Michael: The Faith Tour but am prepared to have to pick my heart up off the floor afterwards. The concert film, directed by Andy Morahan and David Austin, surfaces live performances from two Parisian dates on the late singer’s first solo tour, the unearthed footage capturing the swaggeringly potent spell of his career in 1988 before he took a step back, overwhelmed by superstardom.

It will be accompanied by Finding Faith,…

Connacht and Leinster name much-changed sides for URC clash in Galway

Connacht head coach Stuart Lancaster has made a dozen changes to the team that beat Zebre last week, with just Finlay Bealham, Paul Boyle and Cathal Forde retained for the game against Leinster at the Dexcom Stadium on Friday (kick-off 7.45pm). Boyle captains the side from number eight, alongside former Leinster flankers Sean O’Brien and Will Connors, the latter making his first start for the province. There’s an all-new second row of Josh Murphy and David O’Connor, while an experienced front row of Francois van Wyk, Dave Heffernan and Bealham completes the pack. Caolin Blade is in the halfbacks alongside Seán Naughton, who starts his first game of the season. Harry West misses out through injury, so John Devine starts at 13 alongside Forde, and there’s a new-look back three of Shayne Bolton, academy prospect Daniel Ryan, and Josh Ioane at fullback. Niall Murray will make his 100th appearance for…

Minister for Finance has put PTSB board in ‘straitjacket’, says minority shareholder

Minister for Finance Simon Harris “unequivocally” controls PTSB and has put the bank’s board “in a straitjacket”, a minority shareholder who is fighting to stop the bank’s acquisition by Austrian lender Bawag, has told the High Court. The Tánaiste and Fine Gael leader, who currently holds a 57.5 per cent stake in PTSB, has benefited from “special, incredible rights” since the State paid €4 billion in 2011 to acquire a 99.2 per cent stake in the bank, “disapplying any rule of law imaginable” in the process, Piotr Skocyzylas told Judge Michael Quinn. PTSB’s “board cannot move a muscle unless the Minister approves it”, Skocyzylas told the court, although “he has graciously allowed day-to-day control” to be operated by the bank’s executives. Skocyzylas is one of four PTSB shareholders – who the court heard own a combined 0.00287 per cent share of the bank – objecting to a “scheme of arrangement”…

Key candidates to replace ECB president Christine Lagarde

Candidates to replace European Central Bank (ECB) president Christine Lagarde have been positioning for months but ‌Lagarde’s resignation on Thursday kick-starts a formal selection process that is expected to wrap up in the coming weeks. The following are key candidates for the ECB presidency. Klaas Knot: A trained monetary economist, Knot (59) served two ‌full terms as the head of the Dutch central bank from 2011 to 2025 and has spent most of his time since then in an advisory role or campaigning for the ECB presidency. His 14 years on the ECB’s rate-setting governing council can be characterised by two distinct periods: increasingly open hostility to then ECB president Mario Draghi’s stimulus measures and perfect harmony with Christine Lagarde, who succeeded Draghi in 2019. Considered a pragmatic policy hawk, Knot joined in a period of upheaval as the euro zone suffered a series of financial and debt crises that…

Russell Brand’s wife tells court he is ‘amazingly attentive husband’

Russell Brand’s wife has told a court that they previously split up over his promiscuity but that he was a “wonderful father” and an “amazingly attentive husband”. Giving evidence at her husband’s rape trial, Laura Brand (39), said they fell in love after meeting in 2006 but that the comedian found monogamy difficult.“I wasn’t interested in having a relationship with him if he was sleeping with other people,” she said. Brand (51) is accused of seven offences, including rape and sexual assault, against six women in allegations spanning 10 years from 1999. He denies all the charges. Giving evidence at Southwark crown court on Wednesday, Laura told the court she met Brand at the Edinburgh festival in 2006 after his show Shame, which was “very, very, very funny”, “extremely entertaining” and sexually explicit. She said they met in the foyer of the Assembly Rooms, where Brand complimented her friend, who…
