‘In Ireland a funeral seems like a wedding. In Italy a wedding seems like a funeral’

The lifeblood of traditional and folk music lies in the ties that bind singers and musicians to one another, the often invisible threads allowing melodies and lyrics to flow from one generation to the next. The most creative recognise the inheritance while still making the music their own.

At its best it’s a gloriously porous world, alive to external influences that can breathe fresh life and ideas into the tradition. Where would we be if Andy Irvine hadn’t travelled the Balkans in the 1960s, returning with the most intricate rhythms from Bulgaria?

And what of the riches of the so-called Child ballads, which the Harvard professor Francis James Child gathered in England and Scotland in the second half of the 19th century, and which wended their way into the repertoires of Elizabeth Cronin, Mary McPartlan and Planxty? Countless Irish musicians have collaborated fruitfully with an enigmatic Italian musician of Argentinian…

Soaring airfares

Sir, – This ramping-up of air fares for major events and concerts must end. Flights that may ordinarily cost no more than €60 can cost up to €300-plus when the airlines get wind of these events. Of course we have the idiots who tell the airlines why they are travelling to clue them in as the price soars. It’s time for tough legislation to stop price gouging when big events take place. Many people who are not going to these events may want to travel for medical reasons, visitations or work. They have to pay way over the odds because people going to these events want a good time and don’t care what it costs. – Yours, etc,MAURICE FITZGERALD, Shanbally,Co Cork.

Two years after hoovering up all the gold, Rhys McClenaghan confronts more modest targets

These are unexpectedly testing times in the career of Rhys McClenaghan. It’s just over two years since he became the first gymnast in history to simultaneously hold the Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth titles on a single apparatus. In recent months, however, his fall from the pommel horse podium has been irrefutably swift. When McClenaghan won his Olympic gold at the 2024 Games in Paris – his last podium appearance – his score of 15.333 not only placed him well above all of his rivals, it also suggested his dominance might well continue all the way through to Los Angeles in 2028.Now, by his own frank admission, there’s no guarantee McClenaghan will even qualify for LA. He’ll turn 29 during the first week of those Games, certainly not ancient by elite gymnastics standards, but at last week’s World Championships in Rotterdam he missed out on the eight-man final (placing 10th overall),…

However, he was unfortunate to lose out 4-1 on the scorecards in the first round. In the second, the Olympic BC fighter further committed to that aggressive style, landing a couple of body shots to go with continued straight rights, and the scores were reversed at the end of the session, leaving the bout even ahead of the final round.Donoghue punished some early wild swings from Ashirbay, as the 18-year-old opened up with combinations for the first time in the…
