Polestar’s more conventional 4 SUV is its most satisfying car yet

I’ve never been able to quite work out if it’s an insult to say that Polestar always makes me think of Saab. The dearly departed Saab was, of course, also a Swedish-based carmaker with foreign ownership (Saab by America’s General Motors; Polestar by China’s Geely) and it made quirky, interesting, often deliberately unusual cars seemingly aimed at a more intellectual sort of buyer.

Ditto Polestar, although of course it may well be insulting to suggest that one is like the other, considering that Polestar was born from Volvo (originally it was Volvo’s in-house racing team and high-performance brand), which was Saab’s erstwhile local rival. Perhaps we shouldn’t be trying to rekindle the old Gothenburg versus Trollhatten rivalries.

Still, though. Look at the current Polestar line-up.

A compact saloon with, partially, the raised ride height of a crossover. A large SUV whose roof is lower and sleeker than that of some…

A £3 bonus for triplets – Government to wind up century-old contingency fund

The Government is to wind down a contingency fund established in 1923 and previously used to pay a “bounty” to the parents of triplets and to reimburse Dublin Corporation for the cost of sending fire brigades to Belfast during the second World War. Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers will brief Cabinet on plans to wind down the fund, which holds €1.2 million and has not been used for 22 years. It was established to pay for unexpected expenses – with an initial budget of £20,000 for costs not covered by normal allocations – although it was also used, Dáil records show, for a £3 bounty to the parents of triplets. In 1930 it was also used to reimburse the government representative for expenses incurred in travelling to the funeral of French general Marshal Ferdinand Foch, and for advances towards the expenses incurred by the British vice-consul at Suez “in…

Israeli elections: Arab surge leaves Netanyahu without a path to power

Based on the exit polls, Binyamin Netanyahu has no clear path to forming Israel’s next government. His bloc of right-wing and religious parties was projected to win only 50 seats in the 120-seat Knesset parliament. This represents a significant vote of no confidence from the Israeli public in the first election since the Hamas-led invasion of southern Israel on October 7th, 2023. The outgoing Netanyahu bloc had 64 Knesset members.“The initial exit poll results indicate complete lack of trust in Netanyahu and the October 7th government by the Zionist majority and most Israeli citizens,” said Gadi Eisenkot, Netanyahu’s main challenger. “If these are the final results, this is a victory for the Zionist-statist majority in Israel. I will act immediately to implement the will of the people, to replace Netanyahu’s government and establish a Zionist mobilisation government as soon as possible.”However, the anti-Netanyahu or change bloc was projected to win only…

The question gripping Brazil: Has Trump ally Flávio Bolsonaro fled to the US?

In the end, not even Brazil’s far right had the stomach to contest another election outcome. In the immediate aftermath of his defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Sunday, senator Flávio Bolsonaro said he would call for the results to be annulled. His argument centred on the two-hour extension to voting granted by the supreme court judge who previously served as Lula’s personal lawyer. The judge was responding to a demand by Lula’s Workers Party, which accused bolsonarista-controlled municipalities of restricting bus services in an effort to suppress its vote. The problem for Flávio was that his campaign had asked for its own extension because of heavy rain. Also, Brazil’s fully automated voting system, which is able to compute more than 128 million votes across a territory larger than the continental United States in just over two hours, is able to track when these are cast. So we…
