Is there any chance An Post is taking the post the long way round? It will be cheaper to hand-deliver Christmas cards this year.

Techno-grondlegger Juan Atkins (64) overleden

De Amerikaanse dj en producer Juan Atkins is op 64-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat meldt zijn management. Atkins geldt als een van de grondleggers van de technomuziek. Zijn lichaam werd zaterdag gevonden in een hotelkamer in Mexico-Stad, waar hij zou optreden. In het ziekenhuis werd vastgesteld dat Atkins was overleden. De doodsoorzaak is niet bekendgemaakt. Atkins werd geboren in Detroit, met Derrick May en Kevin Saunderson vormde hij begin jaren 80 de Belleville Three. Ze ontwikkelden in die tijd muziek die bekend werd als Detroit techno. Atkins wordt ook gezien als degene die de naam techno bedacht. In 1988 bracht hij de track Techno Music uit, die verscheen op een compilatie-album van Detroit-technotracks. Daarmee maakte ook het Europese publiek kennis met Detroit techno. Met zijn muziek had Atkins dan ook grote invloed op de ontwikkeling van de elektronische dansmuziek wereldwijd. How to fool yourself into thinking you’re a top investor

“I just love to take profits. I hear music when the cash register rings,” the trader Marty Zweig told Jack Schwager in Market Wizards. Who doesn’t? Investors are often advised to let their profits run, but banking gains feels good. It may also make us feel clever – even if we’re anything but. A forthcoming Journal of Finance paper, Disposed to Be Overconfident, suggests profit-taking can distort our memories and judgment. When judging their stock-picking abilities, ordinary investors rarely bother with overall portfolio returns or comparisons with the market. Instead, the study says, they use a simpler scorecard: how many stocks they sold at a profit versus how many sold at a loss. By selling winners quickly, holding on to losers, and remembering the former more fondly, investors convince themselves they are better stock-pickers than their overall returns suggest. Stress-free comfort food recipes: Marry me meatballs with orzo

Is there anything more comforting than a creamy pasta dish when you’re getting bashed by the autumnal weather gods? I think the deeper question is, why? Why is creamy pasta so satisfying? I use orzo in this dish and I love the way the small grains get scooped up in the sauce, inviting it to be eaten with a spoon. And, creepiness aside, who wouldn’t want their dinners to be so good that the diner might hypothetically consider marrying them? This dish gets a lovely depth of flavour from the Parmesan and sun-dried tomatoes, and a freshness from the spinach and basil. It is a winner dinner in my home and is now on regular rotation.
