British comedian and actor Russell Brand ‌said on Wednesday that friends and colleagues turned against him after allegations of sex crimes were made against him, before telling a jury in a London court that consent was fundamental. Brand, once a regular figure on British television and star of a number of Hollywood movies, is on trial accused of three counts of rape, three of sexual assault and an attempted indecent assault involving six women between 1999 and 2009.

Brand (51) denies all the allegations. Appearing in the witness box in the third week of his trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court, Brand said “no” loudly and clearly when his lawyer asked him if he had committed any of the alleged crimes.

The jury has previously been told how all the ‌complainants came ‌forward to detectives after a documentary was broadcast in 2023 along with a number of newspaper articles in…

Liberty Recycling: Frozen bank accounts, suspicious transactions and seized luxury goods

A major criminal investigation into Liberty Recycling only came to the attention of the Charities Regulator in July, with the regulator saying it felt unable to act until planned Garda searches were completed last week. During those searches, two BMW X5 vehicles valued at €250,000 were seized, along with designer goods valued at some €40,000, including Louis Vuitton bags and Rolex watches. While the assets may have dominated the coverage of the searches, other significant events also took place. Liberty Recycling’s bank accounts were frozen, while its computers and documents were also taken for examination. Detectives from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau’s money-laundering unit continue to analyse the material seized, but it has already given rise to further concerns. For example, it appears to have uncovered evidence that a Porsche was bought last year, allegedly with the charity’s money, and that a BMW was bought this year. The BMW,…

State could reap €90m saving from early repayment of post-crash loans

The Government is considering the early repayment of about €8 billion in loans secured in the aftermath of the economic crash. It has been calculated that any such move could generate savings of €90 million to the exchequer. On Wednesday the Cabinet is understood to have agreed to the option of repaying loans earlier than scheduled dates over the next decade. However, no final decision has yet been taken, and will ultimately depend on whether it is considered to be financially beneficial at the time. The plan would involve the repayment of loans either partially or in full of €8 billion originally secured under the European Financial Stabilisation Mechanism (EFSM) next year and in 2028. The EFSM provided financial assistance, from the European Commission, to Ireland and Portugal between 2011 and 2014. The money was conditional on implementation of economic reforms. Short-term loans were also provided to Greece under the…

Mayo magic rewarded with six All Stars

Only in 1971 was there a wider spread of counties represented in the All Star Football awards, this year’s selection featuring players from eight counties – and, need it be said, All-Ireland champions Mayo are top of the tree with six awards. Malachy Clerkin takes you through the chosen 15, among them Kobe McDonald, who becomes just the third 18-year-old in history to make it in to the football team of the year. Will any of the omissions cause a rumpus? Heck yes, not least that of Paudie Clifford. Followers of Salthill-Knocknacarra would, no doubt, nominate Tomó Culhane as Footballer of the Year after his injury-time goal last Sunday earned the club its first Galway title since 2012. A “moment of glory,” as Ciarán Murphy describes it, “a Galway showpiece had never seen 60 seconds of football like the minute that decided this one”. The way things had been going,…

Spain train crash: Rescuers search site in hope of finding survivors

Rescuers searched desperately through wrecked carriages on Thursday in the hope of finding more survivors of Spain’s second deadly high-speed train crash this year, which has so far claimed 68 lives. Emergency workers were seen carrying what appeared to be a body wrapped in a blanket from one of the trains in a rural area in the central province of Toledo as cranes worked through the night to lift parts of the wreckage of Wednesday’s crash.“Rescue teams are still working very carefully, because we still cannot say with certainty that there are no more victims trapped in the twisted wreckage,” Esther Padilla, a spokeswoman for the ‌regional ‌government of Castilla-La Mancha, told TVE.“A canine unit was deployed yesterday. They will go back in today to make sure that nobody else remains there,” she added. Meanwhile, train drivers in Spain went ahead with a previously planned strike to press for more…
