The Irish Times view on the UK budget: grasping for growth

The odds were always stacked against John Healey announcing any radical measures in his first budget as UK chancellor of the exchequer. His room for manoeuvre is limited by mountainous debt levels and anaemic growth.

And so it turned out. The bond markets took a mildly benign view of a package of tax increases on banks, the gambling sector and property which will fund additional social spending to tackle the cost of living crisis.

What is striking about the budget is what it failed to say. There was no statement of intent from Andy Burnham, the newish prime minister, about the direction he would like to take the country.

Two big-ticket items were fudged. Perhaps mindful that proposed welfare reforms dealt the first crippling blow to Keir Starmer’s premiership, Healey announced that plans to reduce spending would be unveiled in 2027.

There was a commitment in the budget to increase…

Liam Scales on target as Celtic settle for a point against Dundee

Scottish Premiership: Celtic 2 (Durán 18, Scales 65) Dundee United (Sapsford 28, Farrugia 31)Celtic showed their mettle as they fought back to grab a 2-2 draw against determined Dundee United at Parkhead. Colombian striker Camilo Durán put the home side ahead in the 18th minute with his 11th goal of the season and it looked like a routine win was on its way. However, Australian forward Zac Sapsford levelled in the 28th minute with a header before defender Neil Farrugia forced the visitors ahead three minutes later with his first Dundee goal. Martin O’Neill’s side piled forward in the second half and Republic of Ireland international Liam Scales equalised in the 64th minute with a header but despite almost constant pressure the league leaders had to settle for a point. Jim Goodwin’s side arrived in good form, unbeaten in five games, but one damning Dundee statistic remains intact; the Taysiders…

Cop17: Ireland must fund nature protection, Minister tells summit

Ireland will have to come up with the money to protect the natural world, Minister for Nature Christopher O’Sullivan has told the Cop17 global biodiversity summit. He said it was not enough that Ireland was first in the EU to present a national nature restoration plan if the plan was not backed by funding. His comments come amid ongoing discussions with Cabinet colleagues on establishing a dedicated nature restoration fund. O’Sullivan faced criticism from nature, climate and sustainability groups for failing to secure additional funding for the sector in last month’s budget. That was despite the independent advisory committee on the nature restoration plan concluding €400-€700 million a year was needed to halt and reverse wildlife loss, habitat destruction and the death of rivers and lakes. O’Sullivan told media at the Cop17 summit in Yerevan, Armenia, on Wednesday that Ireland needed to do more. “As a nation that is doing…

Taoiseach criticises assertion Irish unity is ‘inevitable’ as he promises new initiative

Taoiseach Micheál Martin promised to deliver a new initiative on Irish unity in a speech on Wednesday night. That initiative should scope out what is required for possible different “constitutional futures”, including unity, Martin said. He was speaking at the launch of Irish or British or Both: The Long Road to Good Friday and the Future beyond it by former Irish diplomat Noel Dorr. The announcement comes shortly before Fine Gael is due to unveil its “blueprint for a unified island”, promised during the summer by Simon Harris, at its ardfheis next week. In his speech, Martin was critical of assertions of the inevitability of unity, which he said has marked recent commentary and is “implicitly sidelining persuasion or change as prerequisites for unification”.“In this there is a sense of the old historical mistake being repeated, where nationalists gather together to agree how right we are and how everything will…
