A Romanian woman accused of “co-ordinated” smuggling of two Albanian men into Ireland via Dublin Airport within two weeks this month has claimed she was duped. Mother of one Daniela Rusescu (34), of Old Barn Court, Northampton, United Kingdom, appeared at Dublin District Court after Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) officers arrested her in Terminal 1 last Saturday evening.

On Wednesday, Judge Michael Ramsey noted evidence from GNIB detective Cathal Brady, who successfully opposed bail, citing concerns about flight risk. Rusescu faces two counts under Section 6(1) of the Criminal Justice (Smuggling of Persons) Act 2021 for assisting two males to enter the State on October 10th and 24th this year.

The accused was stopped just after 8.30pm on Saturday following a flight from Barcelona, Spain. She made no reply to the most recent allegation and, for the earlier offence, answered, “I was not here on the 10th of October.…

Spain train crash: Pedro Sánchez declares three days of mourning after at least 68 are killed

The Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez has declared three days of mourning after at least 68 people were killed and dozens more injured in a collision between two high-speed trains in central Spain. The trains were travelling in the same direction on the line that stretches from the Spanish capital, Madrid, to Seville on Wednesday when one of the trains ran into the tail of the other, which had stopped, knocking several carriages off the track. The tragedy marked the second major train collision this year in Spain. “All of Spain is in mourning,” Sánchez said from the scene in the central region of Castilla-La Mancha. It was “unacceptable for a country like Spain to suffer two high-speed train accidents in the same year, as we have”, he said. Footage broadcast by the regional channel CMM TV showed a derailed train with at least one carriage remaining on an elevated…

Brothers at loggerheads over decision to appoint director to building firm they own

A dispute has broken out between the brothers who own the successful Glenman Corporation building company over the appointment of a third director to their two-man board, the High Court heard. The two sides are already due in court in December for hearing of a shareholder oppression case. Judge Brian Cregan on Wednesday granted an interim injunction to Micheál Conneally, one of the two owner directors of Glenman, preventing his brother and majority shareholder, Albert Conneally, from appointing a third director. The application was made by counsel Gary McCarthy on an ex parte, or one side only represented, basis. Glenman Corporation Ltd was set up 33 years ago by the Conneallys who built up a thriving building, contracting and civil engineering business in Ireland and Britain. They initially worked on upgrading pubs, restaurants and churches before developing housing projects and becoming one of the leading builders of schools in the…

Prem Rugby and RFU commit to expanding with English clubs after report of Welsh sides joining

Prem Rugby and England’s Rugby Football Union (RFU) have stated they are committed to expanding the top-flight league with English clubs in response to a report claiming two Welsh sides could soon join the competition. According to the report, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) is in advanced discussions with Prem Rugby and the RFU over the possibility of turning the Prem into a cross-border competition. It comes amid an ongoing financial crisis in Welsh rugby, with the WRU last week reporting a loss of £18.1 million (€21.6 million) for 2025/26, strengthening its case to reduce the number of regions from four to three. The Prem is aiming to expand from 10 sides to 12 in time for the 2029/2030 season, but the priority is to back English teams.“Resources are currently focused on supporting English clubs throughout the pyramid [tiers] who aspire to join the league,” the RFU and Prem Rugby…

James McClean’s Derry City swansong peters out to a disappointing final note

This was not the ending for which everyone was supposed to be waiting. James McClean’s return to Derry City was supposed to precipitate the end of the club’s long wait for a first league title since 1997. But there was no title victory. Nor was there even the hint of a title challenge. Instead, the season quickly descended into rancour and the only ending fans have been waiting for has been that of McClean’s career at his hometown club. That ending was confirmed in a statement on Wednesday afternoon that announced McClean and the club had come to an agreement to terminate his contract. The club will pay McClean a settlement, which has not been disclosed. The 37-year-old won’t retire immediately, but will take stock and assess his options.
