Fleetwood fantasy sinks Arsenal on penalties

Carabao Cup: Fleetwood 1 (Loupali-Bi 21) Arsenal 1 (Gyökeres 50) – Fleetwood win 5-3 on penaltiesIt’s more than 20 years since Arsenal played at Highbury, but their trip to League Two Fleetwood – and a stadium of the same name – did not bring back fond memories as they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.Aaron Loupalo-Bi and Viktor Gyökeres exchanged goals in normal time, but Arsenal were unable to find a winner, despite being the dominant force, as Fleetwood battled to the end. Goalkeeper Jay Lynch held his nerve to save from Bruno Guimarães in the shoot-out before Northern Irish 19-year-old Conor Haughey scored the winner to bring about a delirious pitch invasion.Fleetwood wanted to turn the occasion into a party, with pyrotechnics galore set off before the match, sending an acrid red mist across the pitch. Once the whistle went, however, the fun quickly ended as…

UCD and Bray reach First Division playoff final

UCD will face Bray Wanderers in the First Division playoff final on Sunday with the winner earning the opportunity to pit their wits against a Premier Division side, likely Drogheda United, for a chance to return to the top-flight.At the UCD Bowl, in a bruising encounter was encapsulated by Sultan Adenekan being pit in the book after two minutes for a crunching challenge on Sam Norval. The visitors, having spurned a good chance through Darragh Murtagh, who blazed over from close range, had the wind knocked out of their sails when Sean Murphy delivered a high ball into the area from the left that was met exquisitely by skipper Mikey McCullagh on the half-volley to put his side three up on aggregate. The Students sensed blood and rattled the crossbar through Luca Cailloce minutes after the restart but then made sure of their place in the playoff final when Hugh Smith…

Rural strategy to improve everyday lives of people by 2031

A significant expansion of transport services such as Local Link and achieving high-speed digital connectively throughout the State provide central elements of the Government’s new five-year rural strategy. Our Rural Future was launched in Dublin on Tuesday by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Minister for Rural Affairs Dara Calleary and Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke. The Government has said the plan will improve the everyday lives of those living and working in rural Ireland by the time it is completed in 2031. Launching the report, Martin said the last strategy had been effective particularly for broadband availability – with half a million homes connected as a result of the National Broadband Plan. He said data showed that 67 per cent of jobs assisted by Enterprise Ireland had been created outside of Dublin and that 57 per cent of IDA investment was now being made in rural Ireland. “There’s been significant population growth…

Family of man stabbed to death call for killer to be given second chance

The family of a man who was stabbed to death after he taunted his 15-year-old killer over his father’s suicide has told a sentencing hearing the defendant deserves a second chance. The Central Criminal Court heard the two stab wounds inflicted on the victim – one which punctured his left lung and another which caused a 2cm laceration to his liver – would likely have been survivable were it not for the deceased’s underlying health problems and issues with alcohol. In a victim impact statement read to the court, the deceased’s parents described the 38-year-old victim as “a good boy” whom they “loved dearly”.However, they said he had “struggled with alcohol” and had been told a few months before he died that “his days were numbered” because of it.They described their son’s death as “inevitable” and said they did not want the defendant to have to “pay the price” for it.“We believe…

Ryanair to close bag drop earlier in effort to give passengers time to clear security

Ryanair has reminded passengers who like to cut it fine by checking in bags less than an hour before take-off that they risk missing their flights from next week unless they show up earlier. Under the airline’s current rules, bag drop services close 40 minutes before a flight’s scheduled departure time. That means would-be travellers have a very small window to make it through security and to boarding gates in a timely fashion. From Tuesday, November 10th, however, Ryanair is making the window slightly bigger, and all bags that are being checked in will have to be dropped no later than one hour before departure time. The change was announced in April, and Ryanair said it would give the “20 per cent of Ryanair passengers who check in a bag more time to clear airport security and passport control queues and reach their departure gate before boarding begins, particularly during…

Michael Carrick given chance to save Manchester United job

Michael Carrick has been given the chance to save his job by turning Manchester United’s results around, with the head coach remaining in place for Saturday’s visit to Chelsea. The decision by Jason Wilcox, the director of football, and Omar Berrada, the chief executive, can be viewed as a surprise given United’s dire form.Sunday’s abject 3-0 league home defeat by Bournemouth followed Wednesday’s equally dire 4-1 reverse at Como in the Champions League.Carrick’s side have won twice in 12 games and were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Brighton. United are 16th in the Premier League, a point above the relegation zone.Yet Wilcox, who has driven the retaining of Carrick, wants to give the 45-year-old a chance to transform form and results. Whether Carrick could survive another poor performance and result at Stamford Bridge is in the balance.United host Roma in the Champions League three days later, then Aston Villa in…

Renters and younger people hit harder by inflation

Households led by younger people and those who are renting their homes are experiencing higher levels of inflation, new research indicates.Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures show households headed by a person aged under 35 experienced an inflation rate of 4.4 per cent in September, “the highest of all the categories examined”. The headline rate for the country as a whole in September was 4.1 per cent.Households renting were also found to be experiencing a higher rate of inflation, estimated at 4.3 per cent compared with a rate of 4.1 per cent for households paying a mortgage, while it was 3.7 per cent for households that owned their home outright. The disparity in how households experience inflation stems from the fact that lower-income households spend a higher proportion of their income on energy and rent.“Each household has its own unique consumption pattern of goods and services and therefore its own personal experience…

Could Tadhg Furlong miss the Nations Championship over alleged groin grab?

Following Tadhg Furlong’s citing for an alleged groin grab on Gavin Coombes during Saturday’s clash between Leinster and Munster, the question looms about whether a ban, should one be imposed, would mean for Ireland’s November campaign. He has been cited under the same law which resulted in Bulls front rower Jan-Hendrik Wessels being handed a nine match ban last year for grabbing the genitals of Josh Murphy during a United Rugby Championship (URC) clash in Galway. On today’s Counter Ruck rugby podcast, Gordon D’Arcy and Nathan Johns discuss the prospect of sanctions on Furlong and what they’d mean for Leinster and Ireland. We’ll also look at Connaught’s win against Zebre, and Ulster’s continued wait for their first win of the season. Presented by Nathan Johns. Produced by Andrew McNair.

Parents and former pupils of Glenstal Abbey in bid to prevent closure

Former pupils and parents of students at Glenstal Abbey, one of Ireland’s best-known private boarding schools, have written to the school in a bid to explore “alternative options” to its closure, announced on Friday. The Co Limerick Benedictine school, in operation for almost 100 years, is set to close its doors by August 2028 following declining demand for boarding school education and rising costs. The decision to close the school of almost 200 pupils came as a shock to many, following major refurbishment works in the last few years. This included the upgrading of all dormitories; the modernising of both the junior and senior refectories or dining areas; the refurbishment of the existing gym and creation of a new one; and the restoration of the castle’s walls. Retreats are offered at Glenstal during the school holidays. Sixth years will finish their secondary education next year. Current first, third and fourth years are…

Children being denied legal representation is yet another shameful failure by the State

The wellbeing of children has a particularly important place on the conscience and in the consciousness of Irish society. We have a shameful history of how we have protected the most vulnerable children. We have had State apologies issued to children and their families for the worst episodes of the Government failing in its duty of care. And in recent weeks we have heard story after story, case after case, of deeply concerning failings towards children. The criminal justice pay dispute that has dragged into its fourth month is now affecting children and young people, leaving those in need of legal aid completely adrift and cases postponed. The failure to provide legal representation is a serious rights violation, but also in the absence of a youth justice agency in Ireland it deprives these young people of a vital support. Their lawyers do far more than paperwork. They may be the…

An Irish language take on consent

Sir, – The outcry about the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre advert with the focus on the grandparents surely misses the point.Children have a right to express an opinion, be listened to and respected. It’s not about how much the grandparents love their grandchild but how much they respect their wishes in that moment. The underlying implication of the negative response to the video is that adults’ rights triumph over children’s rights every time. – Yours, etc,MÁIRE NÍ CHÉITINN,Kilmacthomas,Co Waterford. Sir, – The issue of consent has prompted some interesting correspondence arising from the video of the grandparents’ unwanted hug. The Irish language has two plain and unambiguous words to address the matters of consent and will: “cead” and “toil”. “An bhfuil cead agam, le do thoil?” meaning “Have I consent by your will?”One person seeks “cead” from another in the hope that it may be granted by their “toil”. You can’t really…

Advice for Mark O’Connell from a former fellow book-buying adict

Sir, – Mark O’Connell writes of his addiction to buying books “at a rate that far outstrips my capacity to read them” (“Every year, as I get ready to file a tax return, I experience a strange sort of reckoning”, Opinion, October 26th). Having overcome the same problem, may I recommend the services of his local library. It’s free, and if you don’t read the book, they’ll even take it back and mind it for you until such time as you can get around to it. Best of all, no more fattening the purse of the techie wannabe overlords of whom he writes so well. – Yours, etc,JIM MANNIX,Cork.

Dónal Lunny work on Kate Bush’s defining album brought his music to its widest audience

When Kate Bush arrived in Ireland in the spring of 1984, she had adventure on her mind. And adventure is what she found, as she ended up in a recording studio in Dublin with Dónal Lunny – the pied piper and eternal shapeshifter of Irish traditional music, who has died aged 79.“She is a lovely woman. Working with her was a pleasure,” Lunny would recall of his collaborations with Bush. “Kate had recorded several sessions at Windmill Lane studio, where she had worked with [producer and arranger] Bill Whelan. He suggested that we work together.”Bush was in the midst of recording Hounds of Love, the album today regarded as her defining work, largely thanks to an A-side containing hits such as Cloudbusting and Running Up That Hill, which went viral with Gen Z when it featured on Stranger Things in 2022.But she wanted side two of the record to draw…

Life loan proves a millstone for 97-year-old pensioner

I would like to draw your attention to a very serious issue involving a Bank of Ireland life loan to an elderly lady. I am hoping that by having this case highlighted it will help speed up our efforts to have the issue resolved, and also serve as a cautionary tale to anyone else considering taking on a life loan.Back in 2003, when she was 72, a single woman with no children received correspondence from Bank of Ireland offering her a life loan. Having taken legal advice (she never discussed this advice with anyone), she took out a life loan of €130,000. She actually only needed €30,000 at the time, so she put €100,000 back on deposit with Bank of Ireland, where it has remained ever since. (It is not clear why she took out €130,000 when she only needed €30,000.)As of June this year, the total amount required to…

Leinster’s Tadhg Furlong cited for alleged incident against Munster’s Gavin Coombes

Tadhg Furlong has been cited for an alleged incident that occurred in the 37th minute of Saturday’s URC game between Leinster and Munster. The Leinster prop’s citing follows a complaint by Munster number eight Gavin Coombes during the game that he had been grabbed in his groin area.It is likely that Furlong will face a disciplinary hearing this week. The match citing commission, Peter Ferguson of the IRFU, had a 48-hour window from the conclusion of Saturday’s game to decide whether there were any grounds to cite any players. It is understood he spoke with players from both squads and having read the report of referee Andrew Brace and studied video footage, a URC statement at 2pm on Monday confirmed that Ferguson “has made a complaint about an act of foul play by the Player (Tadhg Furlong No 3) against opponent Gavin Coombes (No 8).“The Player has been cited under Law 9.27 –…

Southern Lebanon devastation shows why peacekeepers must remain, Helen McEntee says

The wholesale destruction of southern Lebanon by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) demonstrates the need for an continuing international peacekeeping presence in the region, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence has said. Helen McEntee has been visiting the war-ravaged country to meet Irish troops who are part of the last Defence Forces deployment with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil). The mission is set to cease operations after almost half a century, having been established in March 1978. The push to end the mission at the UN Security Council came from the United States, supported by Israel. McEntee travelled from Unifil headquarters to the Irish base at Camp Shamrock, near the Lebanon-Israel border, on Monday. She said the devastation she witnessed during the journey reinforced her view that Ireland should continue to contribute to international peace and security, which could be permitted by changes to the triple…

Man arrested after woman (40s) found dead in Finglas

Gardaí investigating the killing of a woman in her 40s in Finglas, north Dublin, have arrested a man. An area in the Melville estate has been sealed off, with gardaí searching undergrowth for evidence. The man (50s) had left the scene and was not detained until seven hours after the woman’s body was discovered. Gardaí were alerted and arrived at the scene on Melville Terrace shortly after 4.30am on Monday, where they found the woman’s body. The Irish Times understands the woman, who had come from abroad to live in Ireland, suffered stab wounds in the attack. The crime appears to have been a spur of the moment incident, rather than pre-planned, and investigating gardaí suspect the killer left behind forensic evidence that will link him to the fatal assault. The arrested man, who was known to the woman, had fled before being tracked down by gardaí at a retail premises. Séamus Power beaten in sudden-death playoff in Bermuda by Austin Smotherman

A third career win on the PGA Tour slipped away for Séamus Power in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship on the paradise island in the Atlantic, where Austin Smotherman won in sudden death on the third playoff hole of a tournament reduced to 54 holes due to high winds.Power’s cap was off his head and in his hands, aware of his fate as Smotherman lined up a three footer for par on their return to the par 3 16th – the signature hole used for all three playoff head-to-heads – where a handshake of congratulations to his conqueror brought a conclusion to the duel.Yet, even in defeat, the 39-year-old Waterford man could focus on the positives after a runner-up finish that changed the entire shape of his season.Outside the top 100 who secured their full playing rights when the FedEx Cup finished in August, Power has made the most of his…
