Tucked away at the end of a tree-lined lane just off Ailesbury Road in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, Ailesbury Wood is a bespoke scheme of 16 terraced homes built by Davy Hickey Properties in 2004 on the site of former tennis courts. They were designed by Crean Salley Architects with a view to blending in with the original period houses on Ailesbury Road, with redbrick facades and understated features.

Number 6 Ailesbury Wood is a four-bedroom home with a balcony outside the main bedroom overlooking the playing fields of St Michael’s College, affording a grandstand view of Leinster Schools rugby fixtures. The presence of the same playing fields also allows for uninterrupted sunlight to bathe the paved south-facing back garden, a superb outdoor space for relaxing and entertaining.

C&C sales fall below €800m as distribution business contracts

Bulmers owner C&C Group increased sales of its own brands in the first half, but a decline in distribution revenue contributed to group sales falling below €800 million for the six-month period. A new trading update from the company said group net revenue fell 3 per cent to €794.9 million for the half-year that ended in August. During the period, branded revenue grew by 3 per cent due to “momentum in Tennent’s and Bulmers” sales, favourable summer weather and a boost linked to the Fifa World Cup. C&C’s operating profit rose 4 per cent to €43.4 million despite the decline in revenue, while the group reported underlying free cash flow was up 18 per cent to €36.9 million, compared to €31.2 million for the…

How Catholic bishops could help tackle homelessness

Sir, – Catholic bishops have said more needs to be done on homelessness. How many vacant homes, including parish homes, are dotted around our towns and villages in Ireland? I wonder whether the Catholic bishops would consider gifting those empty properties to their local authorities to be reimagined as homes? With nearly 18,000 people experiencing homelessness, we need to start somewhere. – Yours, etc,BER GROGAN,Executive director,Simon Communities of Ireland, Dublin 7.

Is English a foreign language?

Sir, – I read with interest your article headlined “‘The focus is finding people from Ireland’: The EU’s big ask for new English translators,” (Business, October 26th). It is noted in the article that Ireland has the lowest proportion of secondary school students who study two or more foreign languages. Is English not technically a foreign language? In Ireland, most secondary school students study either French, German or Spanish in addition to English and our native Irish. If English were to be correctly classified as a foreign language, then the statement that Ireland has the lowest proportion of teenagers who study two or more foreign languages would not hold true. – Yours, etc, THOMAS HAYDEN,Carrickmines,Dublin.

May I suggest … Storm Donald?

Sir, – I can’t wait for this week’s storm. We will struggle to keep up with new names shortly. I suggest Storm Donald. It will blow at an unbelievable rate and could cause structural damage to ballrooms and ponds. However, this storm won’t last long. – Yours, etc, PAT BURKE WALSH,Ballymoney,Co Wexford.
