Asian stocks surged on Tuesday as AI bellwether Anthropic’s eagerly anticipated ‌IPO filing lifted risk appetite ahead of tech earnings that will be a test for the AI trade, and central bank meetings that will influence near-term interest rates. Claude-owner Anthropic disclosed a steep loss and red-hot revenue growth in its filing for a US initial public offering, offering clues for investors dissecting the potential payoff from massive AI spending and its profitability.

While Anthropic’s revenue figures were already largely known, the “decision to proceed with an IPO filing amid recent volatility in the AI trade may itself be seen as a vote of confidence,” said James Ooi, chief market strategist at Tiger Brokers. Also boosting sentiment was Meta Platforms’ plans to raise up to $95 billion in its largest-ever equity fundraising.

In stocks, tech-heavy South Korea’s KOSPI gained more than 3.9 per cent in its steepest one-day jump since early February. Still, the…

Sinn Féin proposes ‘advantages’ for citizenship applicants who learn Irish

One Sinn Féin proposal to reform the State’s citizenship rules would see “advantages” offered to those who learn Irish, including a potential reduction in their residency requirement periods. The party set out its proposals to reform the State’s citizenship rules and laws on Wednesday, saying it was likely that fewer naturalisations would occur under its system. The policy supports recent Government plans to increase the standard residency requirement before a person can seek citizenship from five to eight years, but argues there should be a long-term residence pathway after five years and specific, shorter protected routes. The Sinn Féin system would include “additional advantages for those applicants who have gained proficiency in the first national language, An Ghaeilge. That may include measures such as reduced certification fees or a reduced residency requirement.”Speaking at the launch of the policy document in Dublin, Sinn Féin justice spokesman Matt Carthy said the party…
