US medical regulator was informed of inquiry into Irish paediatric orthopaedic surgeon

The medical regulator in the United States was informed of an inquiry into the paediatric orthopaedic surgeon at the centre of concerns around spinal surgeries when he started working abroad, the Irish Medical Council has said. Dr Connor Green, who was on leave from Temple Street children’s hospital for three years before resigning this year, has been the focus of a number of reports relating to the care provided to children with scoliosis, spina bifida and developmental dysplasia of the hip.

Concerns were raised in 2023 about high rates of postoperative complications, infections in orthopaedic surgeries and the use of unapproved springs in surgeries. Green is now working in LifeBridge Health in Baltimore, Maryland, with a post on the hospital’s website stating he is “accepting new patients”.

Woman dies in single-vehicle road crash in Co Tipperary

A woman has died following a road traffic crash in Co Tipperary on Wednesday. Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the incident, which occurred at Friar Street in Cashel shortly after 3pm, to come forward. The driver of the car, a woman aged in her 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene. No injuries to any other person have been reported. It’s understood the woman lost control of the vehicle, mounted the footpath, and crashed into a shopfront. The road is currently closed for technical examination by forensic collision investigators and local diversions are in place.

Cop17: Ireland must fund nature protection, Minister tells summit

Ireland will have to come up with the money to protect the natural world, Minister for Nature Christopher O’Sullivan has told the Cop17 global biodiversity summit. He said it was not enough that Ireland was first in the EU to present a national nature restoration plan if the plan was not backed by funding. The odds were always stacked against John Healey announcing any radical measures in his first budget as UK chancellor of the exchequer. His room for manoeuvre is limited by mountainous debt levels and anaemic growth. And so it turned out.
