How Catholic bishops could help tackle homelessness

The Irish Times · Irlanda · Prensahace 8 horas

Sir, – Catholic bishops have said more needs to be done on homelessness. How many vacant homes, including parish homes, are dotted around our towns and villages in Ireland?

I wonder whether the Catholic bishops would consider gifting those empty properties to their local authorities to be reimagined as homes? With nearly 18,000 people experiencing homelessness, we need to start somewhere.

– Yours, etc,BER GROGAN,Executive director,Simon Communities of Ireland, Dublin 7.

The “short, focused” engagement involving representatives from the Department of Justice and the society will begin on Friday and continue next week, the department said in a statement on Wednesday. Statements from the department and the society were issued shortly after a delegation from the society, led by its president Rosemarie Loftus, met Jim O’Callaghan for about an hour on Wednesday morning. The department said the parties discussed the operation of the new criminal legal aid regulations – introduced on July 1st – and the withdrawal of services by some solicitors, “which is impacting the operation of certain criminal courts”. It said the Minister and the society “agreed on the need for a short, focused engagement between their representatives…

C&C sales fall below €800m as distribution business contracts

Bulmers owner C&C Group increased sales of its own brands in the first half, but a decline in distribution revenue contributed to group sales falling below €800 million for the six-month period. A new trading update from the company said group net revenue fell 3 per cent to €794.9 million for the half-year that ended in August. During the period, branded revenue grew by 3 per cent due to “momentum in Tennent’s and Bulmers” sales, favourable summer weather and a boost linked to the Fifa World Cup. Distribution revenue fell 4 per cent as a result of C&C Group’s planned exit from some lower-margin customer business and “continued pressure” on certain drinks categories. C&C’s operating profit rose 4 per cent to €43.4 million despite the decline in revenue, while the group reported underlying free cash flow was up 18 per cent to €36.9 million, compared to €31.2 million for the…
