A doctor prescribed medication with “known toxicity” to patients who presented with Covid-19 during the pandemic, a fitness-to-practise inquiry has heard. Dr Patrick Morrissey of Adare Medical Centre, who faces 39 factual allegations, continued with his cross-examination on Monday of Colin Bradley, a retired general practitioner.

Bradley is a professor of general practice and is the expert witness for Dr Maria O’Kane, chief executive of the Medical Council. O’Kane alleges Morrissey, while working at the centre, prescribed hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin, and co-prescribed azithromycin and hydroxychloroquine to a number of patients who had Covid-19 symptoms or who received a Covid-19 diagnosis.

Hydroxychloroquine is used to manage autoimmune conditions including lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, while ivermectin is used to treat parasitic infection. Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, strep throat and skin infections.

O’Kane alleges Morrissey’s prescribing of these medicines in respect of Covid-19 symptoms and…

Public sector pay deal will include reform and productivity measures, Jack Chambers says

The Government will want reform and productivity measures as part of any new pay deal for State employees, the Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers has said. He said this had been a standard part of such public service pay agreements for years. Speaking at an event in Dunboyne, Co Meath, the Minister said the trade unions understood this. “So, there will be proposals around reform and productivity, and they’ll be discussed, and hopefully agreed between all sides, as well as agreement on a wider public sector pay deal itself,” Chambers said. Following a strike involving about 300,000 public service staff earlier this month, talks on a new pay deal have been under way between unions and officials of the Department of Public Expenditure since last week. Speaking on Wednesday, Chambers said very intensive discussions were taking place at the Workplace Relations Commission. “The Government is clear we want to…

Simon Harris denies asking Patrick O’Donovan to resign before Minister fell ill

Tánaiste Simon Harris denied asking Patrick O’Donovan to resign hours before the Minister for Culture fell ill at a EU conference in Limerick. He confirmed he had spoken to him by telephone but said it was a routine conversation and repeatedly said it was “bizarre” for anyone to suggest it had anything to do with O’Donovan’s position at the Cabinet. In his first day back in Government after taking paternity leave, Harris spoke to the media on his way into Government Buildings on Wednesday. Asked whether he had spoken to O’Donovan on October 13th, he said: “I did speak to him on Tuesday during that conference. Conversations that I have with my Ministers are private. The way I’ve seen them characterised is inaccurate.”In response to a follow up-question asking whether he had asked O’Donovan to resign, Harris said it was a “bizarre” question. When asked whether his conversation had been…

Brandon Flowers at 3Olympia review: A master of arena rock still excited by his hits

Brandon Flowers3Olympia Theatre, Dublin★★★★★Brandon Flowers is in Dublin to perform material from his country-rock themed new album Thrasher – but two-thirds of the way through this riotous concert that plan is chucked out the window and he goes for broke with a murderously enjoyable Killers greatest hits set. Experienced in the comparatively intimate environs of The Olympia, it’s a thrill to see a master of arena rock still so excited by his own hits. Flowers rips through the Springsteen-esque two-hander of When You Were Young and Read My Mind and then charges, at full pelt, into the great terrace anthem of the 21st century, Mr Brightside. How can he not be bored with this song by now? But somehow he is not, as, with one foot on the edge of the stage, he leads the audience through that surging verse and then headlong into a chorus that remains almost supernaturally…

At least thirty-nine people have died after a crash between two high-speed trains ‌in Toledo in Spain, according to local authorities quoted by Sky News. “I am shocked by the serious train accident in Toledo,” said Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez in a post on X. “My affection, solidarity and support to all the victims and their families.”Esther Padilla, spokeswoman for the Castilla La Mancha region, told state broadcaster TVE that the incident, which happened just after 9am local time (8am Irish time), was between two high-speed trains heading in the same direction and that one ran into the tail of the other while it was stopped, knocking two of its cars off the track. The cause had yet to be determined, she said. Rail operator Adif said a “rear-end collision” between the two trains had occurred between the towns of Mora and Orgaz, and involved a Renfe and an…
