A small number of “tiny” shareholders in PTSB have claimed in court that they are paying for the Irish Government’s exit as part of Austrian lender Bawag’s proposed €1.6 billion deal for the Irish bank. Stephen Conneely reports from the first day of the hearing being held to sanction the takeover, which received Government approval in the summer.

It is very hard to imagine the boss of a private sector company not wanting to apportion responsibility for a failure to collect hundreds of millions of euro. Yet, that is precisely Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill’s approach to the €125 million in unpaid debts from private insurers written off by public hospitals.

Actually, someone is to blame, writes John McManus. Putting your spare cash towards an additional voluntary contribution to your pension is always a good idea.

Yet, with the Government-backed personal investment accounts set to open next July, Joanne…

Judgment expected on challenge to Drumcree Orange Order parade ban

A judgment is expected to be handed down following a legal challenge to the decision by the Northern Ireland Secretary of State to ban the Drumcree Orange Order parade in Portadown. The Parades Commission granted permission earlier this year for the parade to complete its traditional route down the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road for the first time in almost 30 years. The move sparked large crowds to gather on the road in opposition to the parade returning to the former flashpoint that sparked serious disorder and violence in the 1990s. Police assessed that officers were unable to safely escort the parade along the Garvaghy Road while the crowds remained. Orange men stayed on Drumcree Hill and made a number of attempts to complete the parade by approaching the police line and making their case for almost two weeks. The Northern Ireland Secretary, Chris Bryant, banned the parade on October 9th…

Bank of Ireland raises 2026 income and capital guidance after strong growth

Bank of Ireland has again upgraded key financial targets for this year after positive growth in lending, deposits, and wealth assets. In an interim management statement covering the nine months to the end of September, the lender said that total consumer loans rose by €3.6 billion to €86.1 billion. Irish loans rose around 8 per cent, led by mortgages and lending to small businesses, while deposits were up 3 per cent to €110.3 billion and operating costs increased 2 per cent. The statement added that around 5 per cent loan book growth is expected in 2026, and the bank reaffirmed its key guidance issued earlier in the year. Statutory return on tangible equity is expected to be more than 14 per cent this year, and on track to rise above 16 per cent by 2028, the bank said. In July, Bank of Ireland upgraded most of its financial targets for…

Flávio Bolsonaro lands in US after fleeing Brazil following election defeat

Flávio Bolsonaro, the losing candidate in Brazil’s presidential election, has landed in the US after fleeing his home country where he is under investigation for corruption and money laundering, according to people who have been briefed on the matter. The rightwing politician and son of jailed ex-president Jair Bolsonaro arrived in Florida on Tuesday evening, said one of the people. He then met his brother Eduardo Bolsonaro, who is already in self-imposed exile in the US. A supreme court judge in Brazil had imposed a travel ban on Bolsonaro after his failed election bid against incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The judicial order to remain in Brazil was linked to ongoing criminal investigations and came hours after Lula’s surprise re-election on Sunday evening, when the left-winger won a narrow run-off vote by 52 to 48 per cent. Brazil’s federal police cancelled Bolsonaro’s passports after he did not comply with…

GP prescribed ‘toxic’ medication to Covid-19 patients, inquiry hears

A doctor prescribed medication with “known toxicity” to patients who presented with Covid-19 during the pandemic, a fitness-to-practise inquiry has heard. Dr Patrick Morrissey of Adare Medical Centre, who faces 39 factual allegations, continued with his cross-examination on Monday of Colin Bradley, a retired general practitioner. Bradley is a professor of general practice and is the expert witness for Dr Maria O’Kane, chief executive of the Medical Council. O’Kane alleges Morrissey, while working at the centre, prescribed hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin, and co-prescribed azithromycin and hydroxychloroquine to a number of patients who had Covid-19 symptoms or who received a Covid-19 diagnosis. Hydroxychloroquine is used to manage autoimmune conditions including lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, while ivermectin is used to treat parasitic infection. Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, strep throat and skin infections. O’Kane alleges Morrissey’s prescribing of these medicines in respect of Covid-19 symptoms and…
