The owner of 2 Botanic Villas, in Glasnevin, Dublin 9, couldn’t believe how quiet it was when he moved from a busier road along Clontarf’s coast to this Victorian home that backs on to the Botanic Gardens. The redbrick terrace joins three others in a row tucked away off Botanic Road, and like those on neighbouring streets, is lucky to be a stone’s throw from the 20-hectare park.

Since buying the home in 2014, the owner has tried to make the most of living so close to a Dublin gem by taking a stroll through the gardens as often as he can. Now that he has decided to move to a house with a bigger garden, where his grandchildren can have more space to play and where, as a keen musician, he can add a recording studio, he says he will miss the great location, as well as his neighbours…

Binyamin Netanyahu down but not quite out after Israeli election

Binyamin Netanyahu has failed to win the general election in Israel, but the formation of a new government will be complicated. In the meantime, he remains dangerous. Down but not quite outSoon after the polls closed and vote projections pointed to a close contest between the two main Zionist blocs, opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot urged Israel’s security establishment to “serve the state and the interests of Israeli citizens alone”. And he warned Netanyahu against attempting to cling to power through war.“Don’t you dare use Israel’s security for your own political gain,” he said. As our correspondent Mark Weiss reports, the result offers Netanyahu no clear path to power. But he remains caretaker prime minister until someone succeeds in putting together a coalition that can command a majority in the Knesset. A return to war with Iran or an escalation of Israel’s military operation in Lebanon could produce the kind of…

Coalition talks loom as Israel exit polls suggest Netanyahu and Eisenkot blocs tied

Israel could be in for weeks of political haggling after exit polls and partial official election results showed neither Binyamin Netanyahu’s coalition nor the opposition bloc led by former general Gadi Eisenkot had won enough seats to form a government. The polls published by Israel’s major TV networks show Netanyahu’s governing bloc either tied or nearly tied with the opposition grouping led by Eisenkot on around 51 seats each, short of the 61 seats needed to form a majority coalition government. Speaking at 3am local time, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister vowed to assemble a coalition through agreements between his Likud party, far-right factions and Jewish religious parties.“We must put in place a strong government of the right,” Netanyahu told cheering supporters. “The Jewish and Zionist majority must unite.”Eisenkot, speaking to his own supporters in Tel Aviv, said earlier in the evening that “people decided in favour of change” and Netanyahu…

A £3 bonus for triplets – Government to wind up century-old contingency fund

The Government is to wind down a contingency fund established in 1923 and previously used to pay a “bounty” to the parents of triplets and to reimburse Dublin Corporation for the cost of sending fire brigades to Belfast during the second World War. Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers will brief Cabinet on plans to wind down the fund, which holds €1.2 million and has not been used for 22 years. It was established to pay for unexpected expenses – with an initial budget of £20,000 for costs not covered by normal allocations – although it was also used, Dáil records show, for a £3 bounty to the parents of triplets. In 1930 it was also used to reimburse the government representative for expenses incurred in travelling to the funeral of French general Marshal Ferdinand Foch, and for advances towards the expenses incurred by the British vice-consul at Suez “in…

Israeli elections: Arab surge leaves Netanyahu without a path to power

Based on the exit polls, Binyamin Netanyahu has no clear path to forming Israel’s next government. His bloc of right-wing and religious parties was projected to win only 50 seats in the 120-seat Knesset parliament. This represents a significant vote of no confidence from the Israeli public in the first election since the Hamas-led invasion of southern Israel on October 7th, 2023. The outgoing Netanyahu bloc had 64 Knesset members.“The initial exit poll results indicate complete lack of trust in Netanyahu and the October 7th government by the Zionist majority and most Israeli citizens,” said Gadi Eisenkot, Netanyahu’s main challenger. “If these are the final results, this is a victory for the Zionist-statist majority in Israel. I will act immediately to implement the will of the people, to replace Netanyahu’s government and establish a Zionist mobilisation government as soon as possible.”However, the anti-Netanyahu or change bloc was projected to win only…
