Just over half of people in Northern Ireland believe the British government was right to intervene and ban the controversial Orange Order march at Drumcree, according to a report published on Wednesday. Polling by research agency More In Common found 53 per cent agreed with Northern Secretary Chris Bryant’s decision to block the parade following a two-week stand-off between members of the Orange Order and residents of the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road in Portadown.

Nationalist and Alliance voters overwhelmingly supported the Northern Secretary – with 91 per cent of Sinn Féin voters, 84 per cent of SDLP voters and 81 per cent of Alliance voters saying it was the right decision, but a majority of unionist voters disagreed. Overall, the same proportion of respondents - 53 per cent - said the Parades Commission was wrong to give the go-ahead for the march on the Garvaghy Road for the first time…

GP prescribed ‘toxic’ medication to Covid-19 patients, inquiry hears

A doctor prescribed medication with “known toxicity” to patients who presented with Covid-19 during the pandemic, a fitness-to-practise inquiry has heard. Dr Patrick Morrissey of Adare Medical Centre, who faces 39 factual allegations, continued with his cross-examination on Monday of Colin Bradley, a retired general practitioner. Bradley is a professor of general practice and is the expert witness for Dr Maria O’Kane, chief executive of the Medical Council. O’Kane alleges Morrissey, while working at the centre, prescribed hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin, and co-prescribed azithromycin and hydroxychloroquine to a number of patients who had Covid-19 symptoms or who received a Covid-19 diagnosis. Hydroxychloroquine is used to manage autoimmune conditions including lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, while ivermectin is used to treat parasitic infection. Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, strep throat and skin infections. O’Kane alleges Morrissey’s prescribing of these medicines in respect of Covid-19 symptoms and…

PTSB in court, and health insurers’ €125m unpaid hospital bill

A small number of “tiny” shareholders in PTSB have claimed in court that they are paying for the Irish Government’s exit as part of Austrian lender Bawag’s proposed €1.6 billion deal for the Irish bank. Stephen Conneely reports from the first day of the hearing being held to sanction the takeover, which received Government approval in the summer. It is very hard to imagine the boss of a private sector company not wanting to apportion responsibility for a failure to collect hundreds of millions of euro. Yet, that is precisely Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill’s approach to the €125 million in unpaid debts from private insurers written off by public hospitals. Actually, someone is to blame, writes John McManus. Putting your spare cash towards an additional voluntary contribution to your pension is always a good idea. Yet, with the Government-backed personal investment accounts set to open next July, Joanne…

‘I better give you advice on what it takes to be a teacher’

Dear B_____,Well, you decided to go into teacher training. I guess this means I’m your favourite parent – after all, I inspired you to become an English teacher like me. Looking back to when you and your younger sister played teacher, I think I better give you some advice, or at least let you in on some secrets, on what it really takes to be a secondary schoolteacher. You have to know and love your subject. This is a basic requirement. How can you teach something that you don’t love? With this comes the understanding that you are an expert in that subject. Don’t forget that you have a degree in English. Read widely. Reading books, watching films, going to plays, is now considered “work”, so don’t listen to anyone who says you don’t work during your time off. Pedagogy, how you teach, and classroom management happen at the same…

‘I was always the one with hordes of friends, so I don’t how to handle this loneliness’

QuestionI feel so disappointed in life – as this should be the time of my life that I am enjoying the most. I finished my post-grad more than four years ago now, and finally I am in a job that is fulfilling. But I work remotely – the company is an international one, so time zones vary, and those of us in Ireland only get together about once every couple of months. Many of my friends are moving away to spend a year or two working or travelling abroad, and those that are left are settling down and having babies. I am feeling very disconnected and disillusioned, as there is literally no one I can call to go for a coffee or a moan with on a Saturday. I was always the one with hordes of friends and too much social life, so I don’t how to handle this loneliness.…
